DVD drive not working?

Hello PC Specialist forums!

I've had my pc for about 6 months now, and everything has been perfect up until now!

I just finished burning a DVD and when I went to put another in, it didn't read. I then put a different DVD in and that didn't read either! No DVDs will read in the drive. I've reinstalled the drivers and check the cables are in place but no luck. What can I do here, can I just just the drive back if I have to return it? (I have a year of collect and return)

Give PCS a ring on Tuesday. If they agree it's probably a faulty DVD they will let you send just the DVD player back if you're happy to remove and reinstall yourself. They will also talk you through the removal if necessary.

Thanks a lot, I'll do just that! One other thing, i removed the drive after it stopped working to check for loose cables, will this void my warranty?

You will only void the warranty if you physically damaged the PC/DVD unit during removal. They are happy for you to remove/reinstall components if you have to, so feel free to tell them what you've done so far to try to rectify the problem. It would probably have been the first thing they suggested you try anyway.

Well I only removed it to check for damage after it stopped reading DVDs, no damage visible but I could hear something moving around inside it, like a loose component. Gonna give them a call on Tuesday, thanks a lot!

Okay I've examined it thoroughly (will this void my warranty?) and opened up the drive itself to see a possible problem. Couldn't see anything but it appears that the DVD drive is broken. As I asked before, I opened it up to look for possible issues or obstructions, does this void my warranty?

what you went inside the actual drive? yeh im not sure you will be covered now, because opening things up is usually what causes problems

The drive was already broken, I didn't open it up and take it apart, I looked inside to check for loose components. No breaking seals or anything. I then placed the drive back into the PC and bam, still the same problem of only CDs being read, but not DVDs.

Please note I said "remove/install components" NOT dismantle and reassemble them!
