Dual graphics card question

Does the graphics cards need to be exact same for sli?
Like 1.5Gb Gtx 580 and 1.5Gb Gtx 580

Cant it be like this?
1.5G Gtx 580 and 3Gb Gtx 580

That would work, but the higher specced card would reduce itself to match the lower one, so it would be the same as SLI'ing two 1.5GB 580's

if you have one 1.5gb 580, get another of the same brand and spec. Be cost effective to get two 1.5gb's.
