Yes,with the physical pack (disk) this is possible for windows 7 upgrade, but according to what I've read it wont be possible with windows 8 upgrade disk unless you first do a clean install of the previous operating system. What I cant find is any information on how you would do a clean install with the download version of windows 8.

I actually asked a question about this on the microsoft forums or something, they said I can easily upgrade to Windows 8 without losing my programs, settings etc

Not sure we're talking about the same thing,I was already assuming you wont lose your applications (some sources say different though),what I was trying to find out is, after you do a windows 8 download upgrade & things go wrong in future requiring a clean install, how would you go about it.I Suppose it doesn't matter if you can make a system image backup, but that was my question,I may be missing something simple.:)
The download for £14.99 for users who have bought a windows 7 PC within the stated time, and also the more expensive download for other users with a licensed copy of windows will be released tomorrow, far as I know,so all should become clear in due course.

Got windows 8 last night (about 2am). From what I've used so far it is okay but somethings that were simple in 7 sch as things you want a pc to do are a bit awkward but that might just be because i haven't found the best way of doing it yet. It does boot faster (sub 10 seconds on my ssd) but just feels a bit clunky having to switch between the tablet and desktop interface. The worst thing I've found is that apps don't close when you exit them, you have to then shut them down or drag them to the bottom of the screen which is just abut ok with a mouse but with the touch pad is horrible.
I have a vortex 3 and for some reason i can no longer use the fingerprint reader or change the keyboard colour even though both of the programs that control them are installed. The fingerprint reader is detected but the keyboard option i hotkey has just disappeared. Presuming just driver faults right now but annoying none the less.
Not tried any games yet but steam works fine and the current nvidia drivers say recommended for windows 8. I'll update later after playing some games and trying 3dmark11.

So my recommendation would be to get 7 right now and upgrade later when driver support is better. Also if you upgrade by january it's still only £14.99
Hope this as helped

Thanks Lewis for being so honest.

I have gone ahead and ordered my laptop now with Windows 7. For £15, I will get the offer and use it as and when Windows 8 stabilises. As somebody mentioned, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, (yet.)

Cheers

Get without OS. Windows 7 30 day trial will come pre installed.

Buy windows 8 upgrade for £25 from Microsoft.

Windows 8 is really good. Much better than 7 id say.

you need a windows 7 code to upgrade for the discounted price

No you dont. I just downloaded straight from Microsoft. Never asked me for anything. £25 for Windows 8.

Heres the link

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/buy

If you download the small 2mb file that will tell you if it works then confirm payment after all that.

Waste of money paying for Windows 7 now when windows 8 is that cheap.

Yeah technically you are.

Its a trial version of windows 7.

The file only installs from windows rather than bootable media. Thats why you need to be running windows.

It doesnt even have to have a product key.

I got a Vortex 3 a few weeks ago with no OS (30 day trial windows 7 preinstalled) then just installed windows 8 for £25 from within that trial version.

You can also upgrade from within the version you get from torrents or whatever.

Can someone definitively clear this up for me.

I have ordered my laptop with Windows 7. If I get the special offer on Windows 8, can I do a clean install on another partition on the new computer?

Cheers

The way I read the EULA,legally you need to have a genuine previous windows version with a product key.

Fairly certain its just an upgrade. No new partitions. There was no option to create new partitions with mine.

Can you link me to where it mentions the product key? Are you sure you didnt just assume it needed a product key when really it just said you need a version of windows?

I would give it some time until going for Win8, just ordered a new laptop myself and got Win7 Home Premium for it. If Win8 turns out to be another Vista you wouldnt want to be upgrading to it! :p

Under the heading"What PCs are eligible for a Windows 8 upgrade?"
http://www.zdnet.com/how-the-new-windows-8-license-terms-affect-you-7000003028/

Strange that.

Definitely 100% i did not have a product key.

I got the 30 day windows 7 trial preinstalled as i chose no OS.

Downloaded the 2mb compatibility checker / installer from Microsoft and that just asked me for credit card details and installed Windows 8 for £25 / 30Euro.

Also windows 8 is definitely not another Vista. Really dont see the point If youre paying more for windows 7. Id rather upgrade the SSD or get more Ram with money saved and go with Win 8 while its on offer.

Win 8 may not be a Vista but it is a new operating system. If you can buy the upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8 for £15, until January, it would be prudent to do so and wait a little while to see what all the reviews are.

So far what I have read, they haven't made good reading. That is not to say that in the future everybody will upgrade to it. Many people are cautious at the moment and do not like change, especially changing to something that is so different from its original capacity.

Basically, Win 8 is a giant iPhone and is more suited to iPads and touchscreens. Everybody also knows that Win 8 can easily be changed so that it has a start menu button and becomes another Win 7 again. If this is the case, what's the point in changing?

Cheers

Ive been using Windows 8 on my Vortex 3 for just over a month now (part of MSDN action pack), i wont lie it does take a little bit of getting used to, and you do find yourself using the keyboard shortcuts a little more, but as i also use an Apple a lot im used to it.

The upgrade was simple and all my applications worked after it installed.
The new "Start" screen seemed pointless at first but once it was setup how i liked it, it did become more productive. IE i could see my news feeds from various sites, and load into applications faster I also think this will improve as more applications are designed use to the "live tiles" more effectively.

Do i miss the start menu button? Nope not at all, tbh the way i had it setup before i never used it for anything but search or to get to things that windows + X does.

The only issue i do have is that it does tend to crash a bit, but im sure this is due to the 7970m drivers not being available for windows 8 last time i looked.
