Does an ssd replace the disc tray in a laptop?

If it is your only hard drive it will be fine. If you want an SSD and a second drive then you will have to lose the optical (DVD) drive. If you use the configurator and then click "proceed" at the bottom of the page it will tell you whether any particular set up is possible.

The 17" Optimus IV has an M.2 slots dedicated for SSDs so you can actually have one HDD, one SSD and one optical drive at the same time.
