Do I need to repaste? 780m

Hi folks,

I just got my new Vortex 4 a few days ago. I went for the optional thermal paste but I'm seeing temps of 90C (88-89C average) when running Crysis 3 with no overclock. Does this sound normal? Do I need to repaste?

I'd hope that PC Specialist would've done a good job but you never know...When I repasted my Alienware it made a big difference...

I'm using the laptop on a cooler (cheap crap one tbh) in a WARM room tho... I just don't know what to think..

Thanks

I'd probably do a repaste with those temps. But make sure that whatever paste you got is fine for cpus and gpus. Some are only for the cpu.

Right, just did a repaste. Wow, my temps have dropped dramatically! About 15C! Haven't done any extensive testing yet but its defo made a big difference.. it was messy in there, way too much paste was used. I aslo took off the big white thick sticker on the copper pipes.

Wish I hadn't paid the extra for the optional paste job. Not because I'm tight but because it wasn't done properly.

I'm on the verge of placing a similar order (vortex4 780m 4800) and am worried about heating.

i was tempted to go for the optional compound paste but your thread changes things a bit, i might need to skip this purchase if it could be prone to overheating.
(i wouldn't want to need to open up the laptop to check / repaste).

did you notice if the paste was applied to both the cpu/gpu? what was wrong wth it?

I only did a repaste on the GPU as the temps on the CPU were ok. There was way too much paste. Too much paste is just as bad as not enough. You just want the right amount to create a seal between the chip and cooling system. Its the sort of thing that requires just a little extra few minutes to do it right, you cant just slap on some paste and screw on the heat sink, especially in laptops when using high end GPUs like the 780m.

Also, one of the heat sink screws was practically loose... I don't want to sound like I'm slagging off PCS but on the other hand I can't say that I'm particularly impressed either. I wasn't surprised about having a poor paste job in my Alienware M17x but I was hoping that buying from a "smaller" PC shop would make a difference especially since they make you pay extra for some decent paste.

Anyway I would't worry too much, these things are built to run hot I just wasn't comfortable with it hitting 90C especially with no overclock as I'm planning to use it with a "soft" 10% overclock when I get my hands on a modded Alienware PSU. :shifty:

Thanks for the detailed response.

I'm planning to use the laptop occasionally as render node to render computer generated images (think maya, houdini). They're usually more cpu/ram intensive than gpu. Also this would happen very occasionally.
The idea would be to work during the day (and make use of the gpu) and submit renders at night (and make use of the cpu/ram) with the machine running 8h at night to render the images.
I just need to be careful as I wouldn't want to set fire to it at night while I sleep :)

EDIT:
Ok I placed my order, couldn't wait, I hope it doesn't encounter heating issues

What temp monitor software do you recommend?

Thanks

You should be fine, I think from now on I'll just automatically repaste any high end / gaming laptop on arrival. Its easy but it just requires a little extra care to get that seal nice and neat.

MSI afterburner is great. I also use HWMonitor as it offers more temperature reading on the cpu side of things.

Enjoy your new rig mate, the haswells combined with the 780m make a really great machine.

I got my vortex 3 elite in feb this year. The specs are....i7 3840qm 2x 680m in sli....16 gb ram. I've been playing f1 2012 for a while and decided to check my in game temps. Anyway, after reading this thread I'm slightly worried. I play with maximum settings and get around 110 - 120 fps and one of the gpu's reaches a maximum of 93, while the other one gets to around 78 at the most. When I purchased from pcs I opted for the artic paste, but I didn't expect temps to get that high.....although I've read elsewhere that those temps are normal ......I'm confused. Also, those temps get to those values after only like 5 mins of gaming......but I've never seen it go over 93 even if I played for an hour or more.

Ok I've done some testing on my vortex4 it reaches 89deg C under stress with 3dmark2011 ( 7840 max score ). I once run it with the laptop sitting on a chair ( cushion ) instead of the table and it reached 94deg C.

Is repasting an option? I have to admit 89-94 doesn't seem to bad.
Antway would it be as easy as unscrewing the large bottom panel and everything is accessible from there?
I'd rather think it twice before going through it :)

yeah its quite easy, might be worth to watch a few videos before you jump in there though.

you will need non conductive thermal paste and thermal paste cleaner - Artic do some good cleaner and purifier often comes with MX5 paste, - But dont use MX5 on your gpu, its conductive.

I use Noctua NT-H1 paste, its non conductive and great stuff.

But, make sure you look into it before jumping right in there.

also, bear in mind that the recent hot weather will be increasing your temps slightly.

When I re-pasted my CPU I used THIS to remove the old paste. Then I used THIS paste (because I didn't read the description of the cleaner...) The separate paste I linked would be suitable for the GPU.

Thanks guys, that's most helpful. I went for the additional artic repaste when I ordered my vortex4 but I suspect now it was a little pointless :)
@tom is the mx5 called artic5 too?

So for the cleaning I could use this and buy the paste separately.
For the paste would the mx4 be suitable for both gpu and cpu?

One more thing, would any of you mind running the 3dmark2011 benchmark (choose the full 3dmark experience) and see what top cpu and gpu temps you get? I used the recommended HWmonitor to read max temps.

Thanks again and sorry for flooding you with questions!

Hi LuckyLuca......Just done the test for you, dont know if it will help you at all but here it is.....

My rig......Vortex 3 Elite
i7 3840QM
16 GB Kingston Ram
2x 680m SLI
Original spec from PCS(no mods at all)

My 3d mark 11 score(full experience) Graphics 11353.....Physics 9363......Combined 6424.....3D MARK SCORE P10240

Temps HWmonitor=Core 0=80 degrees.....Core 1=91 Degrees....Core 2=92 Degrees.....Core 3=86 Degrees.....Package=92 Degrees (all MAX temps)

there's no need to worry but your temps are too high, you should be in the mid 80C's especially if you're not overclocking.

..just following up on my previous message, would the mx4 be recommended for both gpu and cpu? I hear it's a good compound and easy to apply
