Difference between i5-4670 and i7-4770

All I'll be using it for is mainly high end gaming and usual surfing of the web etc.

Is a 4770 needed for that, or are they mainly bought for video rendering/photoshop use?

Stick with the i5 if it's for gaming, no noticeable difference at all. If it's for high end gaming spend the money saved from going for an i5 on a better GPU :)

No need for a new GPU yet, pretty sure my current GPU is being held back by my CPU.

Anybody know when the next line of Intel CPU's are out? Or has Haswell only just recently been released?

No idea, but Haswell are very recent.

Are you sure your GPU is being limited by your CPU? What CPU/GPU do you have?

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T @ 2.8GHz
3GB Radeon 7950 Sapphire Vopor-X OC

I only bought the GPU this year so I doubt it would be that, plus I only struggle with some games. The CPU I've had since I built and bought this PC from PCS 4-5 years ago, so it's served me well lol.

Do remember that a new CPU will more than likely also need a new motherboard, at which point it'll be a take the whole thing apart and totally rebuild it, also meaning you could well have to ring Microsoft to re-register your Windows and because its new motherboard they may not allow it to be re-registered to the new motherboard

If your motherboard is AM3+ you could just get an FX-8350, cheaper and easier than a full rebuild. It's rated the same wattage as your 1055T so you wouldn't even have to worry about a new PSU. You should gain a noticeable improvement.

I think Kruppsy offers a strong argument there and probably the most cost effective solution.

off topic (since Kruppsy doesn't check PMs) RE 6 tonight?:)

I'm pretty sure my Mobo doesn't support AM3+ otherwise I would've looked at that.

Also I know it'll need a new mobo, which I have chose. I've also chose a cpu cooler too and a new PC case.

So I'm looking at a nice upgrade for my pc lol.

The 4770 has extra cache and 8 threads

This means absolutely nothing in terms of your gaming requirement, but if you happen to have a habit of bringing your work home with you like I do - the 8MB cache and 8 threads compared to 6 and 4 respectively on the 4670 does wonders when running large volumes of virtual machines.

Assigning multiple "cores" to systems and knowing the CPU has the unlocked grunt to handle anything you can throw at it.
