Defiance Series: 15.6" Constantky overheating cpu

Hi Folks.

Bought laptop 6 months ago and in the last few months the cpu seems to be constantly overheating while doing any kind of gaming. I bought a rift a few days ago and fins that after 20-30 mins of use I am getting cpu critical heat warnings when using cputemp to monitor the laptop. It is an i7-7700hq with gtx1070 8gb. I always use a large cooling pad and use it on a desk 98% of the time.

When I ordered the laptop I went with standard paste as there was a delay of 2 weeks on the improved thermal paste.

Can anyone recommend a good thermal paste for the laptop so I can try a repaste to see if that helps otherwise I may have to return the laptop as those temps seem way too high and I can imagine they will eventually fry the cpu.

Thanks in advance

If it's six months old have you cleaned the dust and fluff out of the insides recently? Pay particular attention to the finned heat exchanger right next to the fan(s). This is where all the cooling is done and a good airflow through there is essential, it's also easily blocked with dust and fluff....

For what it's worth I repasted my Defiance III after 1 year of the PCS MX-4 paste. I used Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut. It has made a truly remarkable difference, maximum CPU temps are now 80 with many games that used to hit high 80's settling in to the 70's instead. GPU similar gains. This with a 110mv undervolt but the paste did the trick.

Worth every penny and a 30 minute job being ultra careful.

Another vote for the Kryonaut for my Defiance (with the exact same specs) and going to the Kryonaut is well worth the time and effort, ditto the undervolt @Filbee mentioned. You'll easily shave upwards of 10 degrees under sustained full load even without a cooling mat as the stock factory TIM and its application leave a lot to be desired ;) . If you decide to try undervolting, I heartily recommend checking this and this as a starting point.

Edit: For what it's worth, I'm getting mid to high 70's in a VR session (FSX+Lots of Addons+WinMR) without a hint of throttling with an ambient temp of ~21*C with the Kryonaut+ a healthy -135mV UV, despite gaming in suboptimal circumstances (without a cooling mat and full storage and RAM slots and sitting on a coffee table next to a decidedly warm Pilsner) :D
