Hi, looking to potentially upgrade my old vortex iii to a shiny new defiance, does any body know if the GPU in the defiance is an MXM module or soldered in/part of the mobo?

Thanks!

It's a new format, so not MXM but it is a modular form factor.

Remember, it's a desktop chip so it's anyones guess how things will move on in the future.

Also consider that gpu upgrades on laptops rely on there being a bios update available for the chassis.

Also, the modules tend to fit the particular chassis, so even an mxm module would not be standard, but exclusive to that particular chassis or range.

Also, laptop gpu upgrades are ludicrously expensive and even more so with the 1000 series.

Basically, if you're expecting a gpu upgrade down the road on a laptop, think again.

Cheers buddy, its no deal breaker, more for peace of mind should anything go wrong - much easier to have a module replaced than the whole mobo. The 7970m in my vortex died on me just outside of warranty so being replaceable saved me about a grand then!

Thanks again,

Andy.

Yeah, for that purpose it's much better to have modular. You may want to get someone else to confirm that it's modular, all I've seen are the 1080 laptop modules, not the 1070 or 1060, so best to be absolutely sure.
