Dead / Stuck Pixel - Optimus Laptop PLEASE HELP

Hi, i received my optimus 17.3" today. To start with, I set it up, installed windows and some software. I was truly impressed with its speed. I can defiantly say the 2GHZ quad core processor is 2X faster than my older 3GHZ dual :)

In the afternoon watched a couple of videos in full HD and they were great - no problems at all. Then i turned it on at night, and towards the upper left, there is a stuck RED pixel? This is annoying because less than 2 hours ago it was PERFECT... - what could cause it to go like that without even being touched? -

Is there anything that can be done about this? - I to be honest believe that as the display has suddenly developed 1 stuck pixel, it is sure to develop more (ive had that in the past) -

Its going to be used for photo/video editing and i would prefer the display start off in 100% condition. - I can understand my older laptops developing stuck pixels and dimming but i cant understand ANY deflect on a new display...:)

isit like this still even after restarting the laptop? if it is, you should consider calling up PCS and they will see on replacing the screen.

Ive left it over night, and ill have a look now... - im going to play one of them 'pixel scrambling' videos and see if it budges - after all, playing a video doesent effect warrenty...

any flat screen even if brand new can have duff pixels, depending upon the manufacturer having one doesn't warrant a replacement. sometimes it's X many within X many inches. I don't know PCS take on this so i'm just saying. hopefully the video will work and you don't have to find out!

Update - I ran the video, and cleaned the screen with a cloth - the pixel disapeared...

Im happy with it for now - Ill rind PCS on monday to log this as its new - if i turn it on one day and theres loads of dodgy pixels, ill send it back and pay £89 for a new display - im not bothered about that. (but lol if i have to replace the display, the new one must be 100% from day one lol)

But were ok for now :)

Stuck pixels are often incorrectly referred to as dead pixels, which have a similar appearance.

In a dead pixel, all three sub-pixels are permanently off, producing a permanently black pixel.

Dead pixels can result from similar manufacturing anomalies as stuck pixels, but may also occur from a non-functioning transistor resulting in complete lack of power to the pixel.

Stuck pixels, unlike dead pixels, have been known to disappear, and there are several popular methods purported to fix them,

such as...

i)gently rubbing the screen (in an attempt to reset the pixel),
ii)cycling the color value of the stuck pixel rapidly (in other words, flashing bright colors on the screen),
iii)simply tolerating the stuck pixel until it disappears (which can take anywhere from a day to years).

While these methods can work on some stuck pixels others cannot be fixed by the above methods.

Also, some stuck pixels will reappear after being fixed if the screen is left off for several hours.

Dark dot defects
A dark dot defect is usually caused by a transistor in the transparent electrode layer that is stuck "on" for "TN" panels or "off" for "MVA"/"PVA" and "IPS" panels.

In that state the transistor places the liquid crystal material in such a way that no light ever passes through to the RGB layer.

Bright dot defects
A bright dot defect is a group of three sub-pixels (one pixel) all of whose transistors are "off" for "TN" panels or stuck "on" for "MVA"/"PVA" panels.

This allows all light to pass through to the RGB layer, creating a bright white pixel that is always on.

This is commonly known as "Hot Pixel".

Partial sub-pixel defects

A partial sub-pixel defect is a manufacturing defect in which the RGB film layer was not cut properly.

Stuck sub-pixels

A stuck sub-pixel is a pixel that is always on. This is usually caused by a transistor that is not getting any power, and is therefore continuously allowing light at that point to pass through to the RGB layer.

This means that any given pixel will stay red, blue, or green, and will not change when attempting to display an image.

These pixels may only show up using certain applications, or they may be on all of the time.

Also , check out ISO 13406-2 , which has a rather snappy title of ....

"Ergonomic requirements for work with visual displays based on flat panels -- Part 2: Ergonomic requirements for flat panel displays".

The ISO 13406-2 norm defines 4 classes of screens. The strictest and best one, “class 1”, allows no defects. The worst, “class 4” authorizes up to 1344 pixels and faulty sub-pixels on a 20” screen! Fortunately, no manufacturers use this class and almost all use class 2 to establish their warranties.
Hope that helps

I know about stuck / dead pixels...

I know dead / stuck pixels are often confused... im well aware or the differences, but sometimes, it appears as 'black' - and sometimes red or even bright white... - THe origional one has started working BUT the lop left pixel has started playing up... - I think it is bareable. But if one appears any where else - more noticible than the top left, ill have to send it back (i dont mind paying towards a change LCD... )

My sister works for trading standards so im very well up on what 'leagaly' stands regarding policys, terms of cantracs upon order and rights by UK law...

I dont think it will ever have to go that far tho :)

The manual that came with your laptop stated the dead pixel policy. They won't repair it for free Unless theirs quite a few, around 4 ish

At times there are more than 4 - 99% of the time there are none... - but the disapear wierdly and come back ? - Got one in the top corner of the screen and it went after being turnd off over night.

Any ideas how much a PCS 17.3 optimus2 display is? - If there are '3' - I proberbly will have to PAY them to correct this foolishness.

- BUT I supose it will be covered in the 1 -2 years warrenty (if i one day turn it on and the pixels actually die - or even 3 year if i turn it on one day and the display totally fails)

I unfortunately also have a stuck pixel on my Vortex II, however it's only one white/light blueish pixel although it is quite close to centre. It is a shame that when you spend so much money (£1800) you have to just deal with small imperfections but I completely understand PCS policy and how the Industry and suppliers set the standard and for us consumers it's really just a case of luck. I have had software running for the last 4 or 5 days to try and unstuck the pixel but also have had no joy and I'm hesitant to try the physical approaches for fear of causing more damage. Overall however my Matte screen is amazing.

Can it only be seen in certain colours on the screen? I have a laptop monitor and I have stuck pixels when the screen shows something white, black or blue and its bright green. Irritating as hell. But that doesn't matter anymore as the motherboard on it has finally died (YES!)

Shame about your problem

It is just luck and there is no replacement policy for dead pixels, (obviously if you have loads then this should be a screen defect and should be covered under the warranty), however PCS do offer dead pixels guarantee for a year for a mere £19. Worth taking up IMO.
