Daft Question ? Maybe, about transferring files from old to new machine

I'm waiting for a new desktop from PCS.

When it arrives what is the best way to transfer all my old files from my now 3 year old laptop - also from PCS.

I know I can just use an external HD or even transfer the files chunks at a time using a large USB drive.

Is it possible though to use a networking cable plugged into both machines and transfer the files straight over ?

thanks in advance for Any advice

Well for me I connected both machines to my router and I could then transfer from one PC directly to the other (though I had to faff about and set up a shared folder and use that cos of Win10 networking).
Obviously transferring like this can only move data files, you will still have to install all your applications/programs onto the new machine.

Ah of course, thanks Rakk

By connecting both machines to the router will have them on the same network, but not over wi-fi - faster transfer rates. It was a bit of a daft question but I am glad i asked.

Yes i did realise this is just for the actual separate application files. I'm glad you pointed it out though in case other readers of this topic are thinking of doing the same thing. I'll install my applications on the new machine first.

Thanks for your help Rakk, it only seems simple after someone else points out the obvious :)

It's not a daft question, I've been asked it many times. Rakk has the solution, you just connect them both to the same router and set up file sharing on each.
