I’m a gamer switching from ps4 to pc. I know nothing about specifications with pcs etc. I did a bit of Googling to tweak this setup I created. I’m basically trying to spend as little as possible, whilst still being able to play the games I like at a decent quality (apex legends, warzone, valorant, Csgo etc). So I also included a monitor that I guessed at and a mouse and keyboard that look half decent. Thanks in advance for the advice.

I'd suggest that you give this a read especially the bit about AMD v intel, then answer the questions raised (use, budget, monitor etc), then we should be able to spec you something.

Well I’m happy to switch to amd equivalent. As I say I know nothing about this stuff, that’s why I came here. As far as paring monitor to specs, I’m not after anything fancy. I just want something that I can play the games I like without any trouble. Maybe watching some YouTube or twitch from time to time. That’s it really. Probably not looking to spend much more than 1000 on this all together to include the monitor.

Well if you're looking to only spend £1000 on everything I'd suggest you either stay on console or save up some more money as realistically you're looking at around about twice that for a complete system at the moment

Neither one of those options are currently possible. I have a friend at work who just built a pc from pcs for 1200, his runs 10x better, faster, smoother than any console I’ve seen. I just didn’t wanna copy his exact build. So I know it’s possible. I just want something that can run games smoothly, for a reasonable price. If you’re looking at 2000 for that then maybe I’m in the wrong place? Lol

You could just about build a very entry level 1080p system including monitor for about £1400, but not a chance at £1000, prices are sky high at the moment, your friend must have got in there before they sky rocketed.

But really, these days 1080p on PC wouldn’t be recommended, it’s a very poor experience by today’s standards.

If the system is for purely gaming going for a next generation console is going to be much more amenable to your budget. As mentioned above prices have skyrocketed, if you want to include a keyboard, mouse and monitor as well £1000 is looking very far away.
If just for gaming an Xbox Series X is a very powerful system. For £600 it will trade blows with a PC that will set you back around £1700 in today’s market. It supports all the games you listed above and also has mouse and keyboard compatibility if you wanted to go down that route.
Could I spec a build for £1000 that includes PC, monitor, mouse and keyboard? Yes, but it would have extreme shortcomings on certain components, no upgrade path, and ultimately provide an inferior gaming experience compared to a console, and ultimately it would be something that I would strongly recommend against.

I wouldn’t touch a next gen console given the fact that I have multiple gaming friends who opted for next gen consoles, none of them are as satisfied as the friends that upgraded to PCs. There are so many games that I want to play that are only pc. “Entry level” is what I’m asking for. I don’t want anything fancy, I’m not interested in running at optimised speeds. I just want to play the games I enjoy without difficulty such as lag or poor response. The friend that I mentioned said he was advised here just a couple of months ago and built his pc for around 1250 without the monitor. Speaking to him, he says what he’s got “is far too much” for what he wanted. I’ve seen it run top end games with ease myself and he said that if he could rebuild his pc, he would downgrade some of the things he put in there to save money. I have no experience with this stuff, that’s why I came here, I can only recite what I’ve heard and tell you my budget and needs. If “entry level” is all I can get then “entry level” is fine.

That would be a very entry level 1080p system that your friend has, you don’t get any lower than that. There is only one current gpu suitable for 1080p anymore which is the 3060, 1080p isn’t really supported at all these days.

£1400 would be for a barebones entry level cpu and monitor, not including peripherals.

And if your friends aren’t impressed with current gen consoles, this level of pc WILL be substantially worse.

Just for some perspective, before covid, we could build an entry level PC for around £650.

It's just not possible anymore below about £1200 just for the PC alone.

This is about as pared back as I would be happy to go.
Could cut down GPU to 1660 but only saves £30. Could lower RAM speed but going down to 2666MHZ only saves £15 so wouldn't advise either of these.
Will handle any e-sport title such as
(apex legends, warzone, valorant, Csgo etc)
but will struggle on more intensive (poorly optimised) titles such as Cyberpunk, Control etc.
Comes to 1169 without peripherals. In all honesty I wouldn't feel comfortable speccing you anything cheaper than this.

This is what I wanted. Thanks. As far as anti-virus goes, would you just install something else or? A family member has a Norton subscription already, I could add another device.

Bear in mind, these are also old parts, so the system is already about 2 years old. So for the sake of saving a few bob, you're lessening the lifetime of the system quite substantially.

We would always recommend Windows Defender which is part of windows, it's regularly rated as amongst the best and free. It's far better than Norton.

Oh and another thing, would this build come with all necessary cables etc? Or would I have to buy anything extra?

That's just the PC, PC doesn't require any cables other than power cable which is included.

Any peripherals would come with their own cables, as would a monitor.

So which parts of this build would you change to increase lifetime? Just curious how much it would change the price.

To bring it up to current gen parts, this would be the equivalent:

Also just to be annoying, at the risk of you guys saying to stay away from pcs monitors (as ive read on other posts) it’s convenient for me to use a pcs monitor here due to the pay monthly option. So if I had to pick one to compliment this setup, which would it be? Or is it really a case of strictly get one from somewhere else?
