Cosmos VII Strange USB error

Hi,

I just started getting this strange USB error today. I have no idea why... Nothing even happened that I can recollect that might have caused this. Even with "no USB device plugged in" , I am getting this message - " The last USB device you connected to this computer has malfunctioned and windows doesn't recognise it"

Restarting or uninstalling it from Device Manager makes no difference and it is irritating. I have checked all the USB ports and they are operational and there is no issue, but then why this error ? I think I've tried all the solutions suggested online like uninstalling the device, running the troubleshooter, restarting, updating the driver, etc. no difference :(

Any ideas ?

If this has 'just started happening' then something has changed. It could be a Windows update, so look to see if any updates were installed just prior to the problem appearing and back those out as a test.

Are you sure you've not recently done an in-place upgrade to Windows 10 version 1803 (April 2018 Update)?

It might be worth doing a full shutdown (ie. without Fast Startup) by holding down the shift key as you select Shutdown. Although Fast Startup hibernates only the kernel and device drivers are reloaded at startup it's known that Fast Startup can be problematic on some machines so it's worth a try.

Did you buy this with Windows 10 pre-installed or did you install it yourself?

Hi ubuysa...thanks for replying. Yes, it was pre-installed Windows 10 with the Cosmos VII laptop... I haven't specially updated it or anything. Auto updates are enabled and I do recollect windows doing an auto update recently...It could be a windows update issue as nothing else has changed. I was just in the middle of checking e-mail and suddenly this popped up. I suppose it's ok since all the USB devices are working and all the ports are fine as well. I could just ignore it if nothing works. What will the full shutdown do exactly ?

The full shutdown will force Windows to reload the kernel from disk. With Fast Startup on (as it is by default) the kernel is hibernated when you shutdown and resumed when you switch back on. Given the curious nature of your problem it's well worth ensuring that you have a clean copy of Windows loaded.

I wouldn't ignore it, something isn't quite right there and if a full shutdown and reboot doesn't fix it we'll need to look elsewhere.
