I have had my system for just over a month, and the power supply fan is making a wierd noise.

Originally I thought it was a car alarm in the distance.

If it was any other fan I would be able to either swap it out, oil it or disconnect it

In this case I am not sure what to do.

It is at a pitch that makes it very distracting while trying to do office work. I have tried tapping or shaking it, and rotating the system, but I cant get the sound to stop.

Is this faulty ? What should I do?

Is this a PCSpecialist machine?

Can you post your full specs from the order page?

Are you 100% sure it is the PSU? I only ask as what you are describing sounds more like GPU coil whine to me.

Given how different people perceive sounds different, might be worth removing the side of the case, sticking your phone in there and recording it and then uploading it to OneDrive (or something that can host it) and then linking it here...that way we can hear it ourselves.
Its definitely the powerbox. The fan is pointing at the bottom of the case and it is loodest there. The rest of the system is almost completely silent.

Ill try to do a recording

It's probably coil whine from the PSU. It's unfortunately a typical factor of electronic components. It's often mitigated with more premium choices, but not always. The CV is the Corsair budget offering which will be more prone to this sort of sound.

If that's coil whine it's the worst I think I've ever heard. Doesn't sound good to me at all. I would contact pcs about an RMA.

Sorry, how does that work, do they send out a new powerbox, and collect the old one at the same time?

And do you get a choice of days?

Swapping the PSU is quite a substantial job, you have to rewire the whole system and remove the motherboard to get the PSU out.

I would suggest sending it back for them to do.

Ughhh... OK

Ill have to leave it a few days, as I need the system until next week

Has the backlog from before Christmas calmed a bit, or do they prioritise returns?

Thanks ever-so-much for your quick responses, guys.

IF you think it is just a bearing, then I can wait a week before returning. I can then get an old system out of storage.

I did not realise I had a budget PSU. Can I get them to upgrade it, rather than replace... and if so how would i go about that?

Cheers again... you guys are awesome!

I think if you go into your account, you can go to upgrades section, I'm not entirely sure if it will allow you to upgrade the PSU or not that way.

Personally, I would always choose an 850W RMx version, that will cover you for any upgrades down the line and is modular and semi passive so the fan only spins when it's under high load.

If it won't allow you that way, just give them a call and ask.
