Cooling and case fan

Just wondering, will the £19 cooler fit in the Maelstorm T900 case or will the side fan have to be removed?

Ideally, someone who has that case and fan will confirm. I have that case and the Titan Fenrir cooler - which is huge and very tall. The side fan kind of fits but I noticed that the fan's surround - not the blades, thankfully - would snag slightly on the tips of the heat-pipes when I slid the side on and I was worried that it would push the heatsink sideways - which could affect cooling and potentially warp the motherboard. All I did was grind a small notch in the case fan's surround and it's fine.

It's worth noting that you can use that case and replace the single large fan with two 12cm fans if you have a problem - the mounting holes are already there. The downside is that you'd need to do something to control the speeds as smaller fans are noisier and it's not a good idea to connect fans on a removable side directly to the motherboard headers. In practice you wouldn't need them spinning full speed in that location so a simple in-line resistor would be fine.

Thanks for the reply, i love the fan on the side and would really hate if it was removed.

And what do you mean by a small notch, can you expand or post a picture?

Basically, when I saw it was catching, I rubbed a marker pen (one of those for writing on white-boards) over the area on the fan's surround and then put the side onto the PC. When I took it off again, there was a clear mark of where it was rubbing. I just filed it down slightly in that immediate area - it only needed a couple of mm depth and about a cm wide (it didn't need that much width but it made it easier to get a neat result without cutting too deeply). I should warn you - the fan is made of hard, brittle plastic so I had to work carefully letting the file do all the work - no pressure or the plastic could easily crack.

I'll try to get some photos but it may be difficult as the fan is shiney, translucent plastic. It won't be tonight as there's no way I'll be able to get a clear photo using a flash. A drawing may be better - leave it with me.

Obvious warning - you'll be risking (at least some of) your warranty. It may not even be necessary - the tips on the cooler are crimped so there's bound to be some variation. Oh yes, that fan looks great with the LEDs on - they don't light the while fan - more like four laser lights shining across it.
