Hi people im having a problem with my comp turning itself off every now and then. Its been a week and my psu has now packed up. Ive put another psu in and it still turns off. My cpus dont run past 30 degrees temp so dont think its cooling system. I have and led poster message on comp saying CPU INIT but not sure what this is. Can anyone help with this.

CPU INIT failure is oneof those things that can have dozens of possible causes because it's not an error as such - just the PC stalling when it tries to intitialise the CPU at start-up. Unfortunately, that makes it very difficult to diagnose on a forum as the only way to go is trial and error - checking every possible cause one at a time until you find the actual cause.

In this case, however, I'd start by asking you how long you've had the PC because of the failed PSU and the fact that many of the possible causes - shorts to the mounting plate, bent CPU pins etc - can only be checked by dismantling the computer. If the PC is still under warranty, I think you should contact PCS by phone or email on Monday.

If your warranty has expired or you know that you've invalidated it, you can try one simple thing - remove all but the first stick of RAM and see if it boots okay. If it does, it's very likely that you need to adjust your BIOS settings but until you provide somemore information, it's difficult to be ay more precise than that.

Can you post back and give us full details of the motherboard and CPU. Also tell us how long you've had the PC, when the problem started and if you hd any problems prior to that, if the system is overclocked, if you've recently changed any major hardware, if you've recently updated BIOS and if you've ever removed/swapped the CPU or removed the motherboard from the case.

This setup is 4 years old so not covered under warranty which is shame. Ive not overclocked it. Its a striker extreme MB with the quad core q6600 cpus. Havent changed anything other than the psu. Was thinking maybe the bios has reset so will check that out after ive taken out the other 6gb of ram i have in. Thanx for your help i will get back when ive done all the checks. Cheers

If you are losing BIOS settings, the first thing to do is to replace the CMOS cell - the round, silver battery. You can buy them in most supermarkets these days - just make sure to get an exact match as there are several that look very similar (there's a ref on the cell - something like CR2032). You're looking at £1-£2 in a shop. (You can also get them online and they can be a lot cheaper but stick to a good seller and a good brand)

Apart from that, we'll see what you've found you post back.

Right i have checked my bios and all settings are as they were. Ran comp in safe mode uninstalled anything that was recently put on comp. Its been on and stayed on. The next thing i tried was my games and behold it turns off as soon as game tries to load. Now would this be insufficent power going to GPU or any thoughts on what it might be, it only shuts down when starting a game as far as im aware at the minute. I was running 600w psu which was on its way out but now im only running 500w with one power plug the old one had 2 4 pins. Oh yeah im running to 8600gt in SLI if thats needed to help.
