Comparisons to console

Scott out of interest regarding the cheapest build you outline:
Excellent Entry level 1080p £875* - https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am4-gen3-pc/gUf4VZf9tW/
In terms of playing games is this machine as good as the upcoming PS5 and X box series X consoles?
I appreciate this machine does a lot more and is not just dedicated to playng games like the consoles but how it how would if hold up do you think?
Thank you.
Bob.
The latest consoles are 4k machines so a lot more powerful than a 1080p rig.

The XBox series X has just under a 2080ti GPU in it, so it's nearer the £2k valuation in PC terms.

Wow! Thanks for that, it shows what great value they are for the money but this makes sense as they are dedicated to one job only and are mass produced. I was just interested how they compared. Are you going to get one of them in the future or do you game solely on your P.C?
Thanks very much.

PC gaming is a million times better than console gaming, I'd never go back.

The XBox series X is going to be over £1k, there's no way they can do it under that unless they really do make a ginormous loss on it.

PS5 is quite a bit less powerful, but I still reckon it's going to be around the £1k mark.

I understand as it must be very hard to go back once you build and own a great hi spec gaming P.C.

Like you say it will be very interesting to see how much they are when they come out.
What about the Excellent Entry level 1080p £875 P.C versus a Nintendo Switch? Are they more comparable in gaming performance ?
Thanks for your feedback about my questions. :)

they were sayin starting price would be around 500£ but they making 2 versions, like xbox one / xbox one x, thats why i was thinking there is no way they put those specs in console under 500£ that would set up whole pc economy down as 12 TFLOP GPU cost otself nearly 2k :D but lets see what will happen

There's been no word on pricing from Microsoft or Sony, the only pricing so far has been from 3rd party sellers, and they just post a figure to get people to preorder with them, but it has no bearing on the actual cost. There's absolutely no way it will be under £1k unless the companies are taking a huge loss on this series, but given everything that's going on, there's no way they could afford to do that, especially Sony who are already getting negative news on their announced specs.

It looks like the 2 sites that had listed pre orders have taken them down anyway, probably made to by regulating markets.

It is going to be interesting. If they do release it anywhere near £500 I’m definitely getting the Xbox if only to play Halo Infinite which does look amazing.

Apparently, they might open them up to a subscription model given the circumstances, like a phone contract to get people to buy them.

there’s also a chance that they’ll keep the console price low but raise the game prices to make up the difference.
I’d love a subscription model personally, I think that would almost guarantee widespread adoption even if it was £1k

I've not been keeping up on the console latest but just from going through this thread it explains the claims on 8K.

£1k for a console? That's just bonkers. I get that it'll be a lot in the box, but it's so restricted IMO. I've not switched my PS4 on for YEARS. My 360 gathered dust for years before that too haha.

I don't think I'll be an adopter of this generation TBH. VR has me hooked and the PSVR isn't even close to what I get to experience.

I know a senior sales exec for Microsoft and they sell most of their top end hardware at a huge loss so there's no way the XBX will be that expensive or they won't sell any. They rely on software sales to claw back all their money.

Microsoft and Sony will sell there consoles at a huge loss, but will make their money back through Xbox Live Gold / Xbox Game Pass / Game Pass Ultimate / Playstation Plus / Playstation Now, services,

It's unlikely anyone will want to pay £1k for a console, When the PS3 launched with a price tag of £599.99, it just wasn't selling.

I'd seen a recent survey that most people who want buy the next gen consoles, they would by happy to pay around £400 - £500 for them,
Personally i think they will come in at around £500 - £800, due to the spec's of them.

One thing that makes me laugh is, having seen some posts on Xbox forums of people wanting or getting 8K TV's, expecting to be gaming at 8K 120 fps, when they launch.

Ha ha, numpties!
Yeah,
I remember, I watched video i while back on Youtube, I think it was either Linus Tech Tips or Digital Foundry, Attempting to game at 8K on PC, on an 8K TV,
I can't remember the spec's of that PC but it had two 2080 Ti's in it, I believe that the total cost of that PC build was around £5000 mark,
The PC just about hit 60fps at 8K but it was an unstable 60fps,

I don't know how some people got the idea, that they think there going to be gaming at 8K with 120fps on the Series X, when PC's can't yet achieve this, and PC's are and have always been ahead of consoles in performance.

But to be fair the Series X isn't messing around with those spec's.

I've been gaming on consoles, going on 30 years and PC gaming on and off from 2006, but as of more recently, after my new PC build on here, I've not really used my Xbox One X / PS4 Pro much anymore,
I'm a console gamer at heart and will be getting Series X and PS5, but i can't deny, I'm enjoying PC gaming much more, even though gaming on a Mouse and Keyboard is still alien to me, but i'm not taking the easy road of using a controller, with the exception of racing games.

I was exactly the same, moving to PC and keyboard and mouse actually took a lot of hard work to retrain myself and get finger memory on the keys, plus the instantaneous reaction of mouse vs controller, but when I eventually grasped it, I’ve never looked back.

thing is with this generation of console, they really are just micro PC’s, and now they’ve even got native keyboard and mouse support. It really is becoming less and less a console and just a cut down OS on a PC.

OT but I can understand difficulties getting used to a keyboard. A good while back a friend and I decided to have a quiet country break in cottage. As it was self catering we had quite a bit of food to take and wanted to minimise other things. We both had some work to do but not much, so decided to take just one laptop and as mine was a PCS Octane and her's something from PC World the choice was a no-brainer.

There was one problem. I use a German (QWERTZ) keyboard and my friend is a touch-typist. Apart from the Z and Y in swapped places I also heard the odd shout of: "I don't want a **** Umlaut."

Do you guys thing that gaming is the main driving force behind the advances in graphics that we see these days? Or is it something else?

I think there are a couple of factors, gaming is certainly a hefty financial gain for the GPU vendors.

But there's also cryptocurrency which even now sees a very healthy uptake of stocks.

Gaming may be a big money maker, but aren't most of the gaming tech passed down from their professional cards?

Both MS and Sony make massive losses on the hardware but more than make up for it on licensing and Xbox Live/PSN subscriptions.

On the PS4 and XBox One, Sony made $18 profit off each console, Microsoft made $28 profit.

But the BOM was significantly lower and under $500.

The surface pro BOM is significantly under their retail cost again.

They may be making a loss on the overall cost of marketing and promotion, but they certainly don’t make a loss on BOM costs.

This units BOM has to be around 1k, perhaps a bit under, but I don’t see them going for £500 retail.
