Check my spec (in anticipation of the RTX5090)

Hi all,

Just preparing my choices for a new build in anticipation of the RTX5090 coming out.
I'm no expert so would love some feedback on whether everything I've gone with here will work smoothly together. I'm in France FYI, hence the European cable etc.

Uses: Training LLMs and general generative AI use (training and generation)
Budget: 8k

Thanks in advance! Let me know if I've forgotten anything.

The only two items I’d remove from that beast are the Arctic thermal paste (the Corsair pre-applied paste is better), and remove Norton as you don’t want that anywhere near the system (even as a free trial).

Great tip! I would never have known! Thank you!

Any advice in terms of case choice? I've just gone with the prettiest because I know nothing about cases.

Of the limited cases currently, that LianLi is a good choice…the alternative is the Corsair 6500X, but that would cost more due to needing to add 3 fans to the build to add to the bottom or side (bottom would be better for airflow).

Thank you... I guess with the Corsair all the fans will be of the same brand.
By the way, I notice in your signature that you have a Studio Display. Do you ever use that with your PC? If so, is the set up complicated? I also have a Studio Display and a Mac Studio, was wondering whether I could have a set up where I quickly flip back and forth between this new build and the Mac using the Studio Display only...

The fans for Corsair products differ based on the model of cooler or fan pack, the 6500X case doesn’t come with any (maybe a basic single black rear fan).

The current ‘premium’ ones are iCUE LINK RX (in the kits and the Titan AIOs). The next level down are the RS fans, but I don’t think they’re used on any AIOs that PCs offer. The next level down are those included in the Corsair iCUE RGB cases (not iCUE LINK), as they’re the cheaper AF or SP fans (on Capellix AIOs as well).

Did try the Studio display on the PC, but it needs a power signal over the Thunderbolt cable to wake it, and the PC doesn’t seem to send it consistently. I tried multiple cables, and some workarounds but it was never consistent and didn’t spend any further time on it as I had an OLED monitor to use with the new PC, and a decent 27” 1440 LG IPS monitor to use as a secondary monitor on either system.

I will say that the odd time I got it to work it was only ever at 4k, and trying anything at 5k caused the screen to slowly flash on and off.

The only way I saw that worked reliably was if the GPU had Displayport over Thunderbolt (which most don't have), and the other 'hacks' were to feed a Thunderbolt signal into a GPU DP port and then out of another DP port...but I didn't have Thunderbolt on the PC I was testing it on, and haven't tried it on my newer PC.

Ok great - Think in that case I'll go for the Corsair case with the ICUE LINK TITAN 360 RX RGB cooler (guessing the only benefit to paying more for the LCD is... displaying meme gifs?) and the 6 extra RX120 RGB PWM Corsair ICUE LINK fans so they can all match.

Fair enough on the Studio Display, from what I'd been reading elsewhere it's either impossible or not worth the effort to get it working properly.

The LCD is only handy if you want to track coolant/cpu temps, rather than funny memes - but you can add that at a later date if you feel you're missing out.

There's no real need for 6 fans except for aesthetics, as the 3 bottom intake will nicely match the airflow of 3 exhaust fans on the cooler plus the single exhaust fan on the back. If you do go for 6, then you'll want the side ones on a very low setting (fixed speed less than 1000rpm) so they stay silent, and the bottom ones on a speed vs temp profile.
