Cannon Lake (and Coffee Lake) - Not worth it?

I was looking to hold off till the next gen of CPUs were released but from reading around it seems it's going to be aimed more at the notebook/tablet market than they are at desktop chips. There's actually a rumour that Coffee Lake is going to be the desktop chip with a likely 6 core offering being the upper end of the scale. Interestingly I read that the mobile CPUs may be 6 core too which will be interesting.

So, I'm thinking I might just take the plunge on Kaby when the funds allow. The new motherboard features are really nice and as much as the 300 series Intel board looks good, I'm not overly concerned about waiting for them.

I've also read that the chip may remain 1150, which would be just gravy for me if true.

Any thoughts?

I'm sitting Kaby Lake out, partly due to funds but mostly as if I didn't bother with Skylake there's not much point bothering with Kaby. The new mobo features are what's most attractive but I can live without them. An M.2 SSD / M.2 SSDs plural would be nice but if I get desperate I might look into a PCI-E to M.2 adapter. It's not like I use the slots for much else.

I'm also interested to see what Zen is going to be like. It won't match Intel's quad cores for gaming at first I expect but AMD have indicated they will keep Zen for ~4 years and I want to see if their iterations offer reasonable improvements such that we see near-as-makes-no-difference very similar performance or if it will just get further and further behind as with the last lots.

I was exactly the same until I started looking into Cannonlake. The powerhouse desktop chips apparently won't be released until WELL into 2018 and reading between the lines I don't think there is much focus on them at all. I don't know if I can wait that long for a new toy, especially if it's going to be a potential disappointment.

I'm looking forward to Zen coming out as it will, hopefully, be a price competition for Intel to bring prices down...... a little doubtful though. I definitely won't be going for Zen though, I'm always an Intel man.

Wait for Ryzen as well. We don't know exactly how well it will perform but could at least push Intel prices down as well.

I'm on the wait for Ryzen too.
I mainly want a nicer motherboard. I've got a great 4790k but now my nice board is dead there aren't any nice z97 choices worth the money.

Seem a lot of people waiting for Ryzen, especially since all chips will be overclock-able by default :D I'm not sure if Intel will drop prices by much... it would upset a lot of people who already paid for their CPUs .. would like to see how they gonna explain it to their customers.
So they will have to add new features and up the clock speeds. Intel is terrible when it comes to lowering prices. I know recently, they finally added hyper treading to Pentium range as far as I know. Shame i5 not come with hyper treading, but then what would be the point of getting i7, hmm. I say, bring on the Ryzen and either we will finally get some innovation on the CPU market or we will be stuck with Intel for ever!
