Building a medium level gaming laptop

Hi,
Another buyer quite new to laptops, any feedback would be appreciated. I am looking for a laptop that can used for gaming and general media viewing. It should be able to play recent games at low-med quality settings, but to be honest I would mostly be using it for games from a couple of years back.

Thank you for you advice. After checking and fiddling about I have managed to increase my budget by a bit and am now looking at the defiance 17" with a 965m card. I have a strong preference for 17" and it seems like a good deal at the price but it is pretty much at my budget limit.

You can get the skyfire 17.3" with the gtx 970m which is significantly better than the gtx 965m for roughly the same amount

Oh wow, yeah that's great. If I take a starter quad core processor with that would it be sufficient? Or should I be looking for a better processor for that type of graphics card?

Thanks a lot for your help! I went ahead with the Skyfire and its awesome graphics card. Wonder if its worth getting a SSD drive as a 2nd HD?
My low end gaming plans turned into a bit of a beast, though probably will have to stove away any holiday plans for awhile! :D
