Budget Gaming/Office PC

While I do grasp the basic concepts of assembling a PC piece by piece, I've never actually done it before so please be gentle if I've made silly choices/suggestions :) I'll try to include my personal reasoning for each thing and hopefully the knowledgable will correct me where I've screwed up. Compared to most I'm on a pretty tight budget of (at most) £600 but the closer to the £500 mark the better. I'll likely invest in monitors at a later date but for now I'll use the ones I already have. The goal of the machine is somewhat of an "all in one" with medium gaming, office use and a bit of image and video editing here and there.

Case: COOLERMASTER ELITE 311 BLUE CASE
I picked this one just because it was fairly cheap and I personally liked the look. If someone has a "but you can get x for about the same price and it has xx% better cooling etc" thought on this I'm all ears :)

Processor (CPU): AMD A8-5600K Quad Core APU (3.6GHz) & Radeon™ HD 7560D Graphics
From my understanding, quad will always be better than dual core and from the benchmarks I found online this seemed to be one of the most efficient for the money in my budget range.

Motherboard: ASUS® A55BM-E FM2+ (M-ATX, DDR3, USB 3.0, 6Gb/s)
There were only 2 choices and this was the default ;)

Memory (RAM): 8GB KINGSTON DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8GB)
Since my old machine was running 2x2Gb the 8 seemed like a reasonable goal for this next build and the 1x8 configuration (to me at least) suggests I could add another 8Gb at a later date rather than having to work around a 2x4.

Graphics Card: 2GB AMD RADEON™ HD7850 - DVI,HDMI,DP - DX® 11, Eyefinity 3 Capable
At present whenever I get a new game, one of the first things I have to do is turn down all graphics settings which isn't fun so even on a budget I wanted to splash out at least a little and from benchmarks and reviews I've found online this seemed to be good value for the performance. Any alternate suggestions are appreciated but baring in mind the 2 monitors I intend to use are a DVI and a VGA adapted to a DVI (the 7850 has 2 DVI interfaces).

Memory - 1st Hard Disk: 2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 64MB CACHE
Between my steam library and video/photo editing it seemed silly to not quadruple the storage capacity for relatively little money.

Power Supply: CORSAIR 550W VS SERIES™ VS-550 POWER SUPPLY
The auto-check thingy said the system would need 419w and therefore I'd only need a 450w supply but that didn't seem like much wiggle room especially with the graphics card and the dual monitor setup.

Thanks in advance :)

I have that same case, with an i5 and a 7870 in it. So fairly similar to your proposed spec. Overall it is not the best in the world but you wont have any problems with overheating or anything like that as I have run my GPU maxed out for hours and hours without issue.

The motherboard is a basic one but for you it will be ample.

8GB of RAM will be more than enough for a mid table gaming machine.

The 7850 is a decent card, just 1 step down from what im running and i have no trouble playing anything at fairly decent settings, however that is going to change over the next year or so as the specs get cranked up on games.

If you don't mind sacrificing performance then go for the 2TB drive. Personally i would say get a 1TB caviar black for the same money, a fast HDD makes the system feel so much better, that's why everyone wants a SSD now. However on your budget a SSD is not on the table.

Overall it is a well balanced spec. With so little money to play with it is hard to recommend anything that will save money or where you could improve performance. The main area i would change is the HDD because it is probably one of the easiest to upgrade later along with RAM. if you need more storage at a later date then you can pick up a drive as you need ti and just follow a YouTube guide on how to fit it.

I would try to push for an FX-6300, an apu cpu is ideal if you are planning to use the integrated graphics card which you are not since you added the hd 7850.

You could just get 4gb RAM not to compromise on other components like the cpu or case.

The configurator adds 20% allowance so 450w will be plenty unless you are planning to add a more powerful gpu in the future.

I tend to be quite a way behind on modern games (I only just picked up Skyrim ;)) so that's unlikely to be a problem.

Nice point :) Oddly enough I was looking at some stuff online and people were talking about how good their caviar blacks (and blue maybe?) were so I'm sold on that change.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but I'm not seeing the FX-6300 in the build options.

Hmm,, something to think about.

With the caviar black it comes to 430 something but good to know I can get away with a 450 :)

How about something like an i3-4130 on an ASUS h81m-e instead? From a layman's point of view it's slightly slower MHz and only dual core but the benchmarks show it ranking higher than the AMD above.

I couldn't see it for the life of me until I realized that those processors were only the "top spec computers" section where with my budget I'd been sticking to home/office and performance :) They do seem a bit expensive but I'll see what I can come up with thanks :)

Oddly enough that's very similar to what I came up with after following your suggestions :) (even down to the same case change!) The only difference is I still used the 7850 and upgraded to a 1Tb caviar black. Overall do you think I'd be better with the GPU or the HDD upgrade?

(sorry to be a pain but all the help is appreciated so I can get my order in at the start of the new year :))

Okay thanks. I did have one other thought though, if I was upgrade my RAM to 8Mb at a later date wouldn't that immediately void any warranty?

No it wont void warranty,PCS allow you to open the case to do upgrades etc,but obviously you must be careful not to damage anything in the process.

Even better, thanks for the info :)

Ok hopefully the last thing. Since I like to at least try and keep up with current OS I was going to go for Windows 8.1 so I was wondering how memory intensive it is and will the 4 Mb RAM be okay to start out with? I'll be up to 8 "fairly" soon I hope but was just curious.

Okay then :) Following a slightly bigger Christmas bonus than I was expecting the budget has gone up a little so I can get the 8Mb RAM (inclusive rather than after market) plus the WD 1Tb. This is what it's looking like now if there's any final thoughts before I order it in the new year? :) (the 10th I think)

Just when I thought I was completely set to order a relative now wants the old machine so I need to make a few minor changes.

Previously I was using a usb adaptor for my wireless connection but since that is going with the previous rig I might as well get an actual wireless card. I'm going to assume I'm wanting one of the wireless 802.11N 300Mbps cards but would I be better off with the regular PCI or the express version since both are available and for the same price?

I'm also going to need some more DVI cables so pretty much that means I need to find £30ish in the budget. The most likely candidate from what I see if cut the RAM back down to 4Mb and get another 4 at a later date unless I'm missing something?

The PCI-e is better but both should offer similar performance.

£30 for 1 DVI cable? :) it is like £3 online. You could downgrade to 4gb RAM .
