Broadband question

Me and my girlfriend are probably and hopefully moving to Wingham (Kent) at the end of January, 2011. Very excited about this and also very excited about that new comp that I plan to buy to celebrate this move :)

However, today I did some tests regarding possible ISPs for the new house and that was, to say the least, not so good news. ADSL seems to be the only viable option but, worse still, having speed ckecked on BT, Virgin and Sky, the download connection will be around 0.5 - 1Mb.

That is obviously very bad. Any tricks/help/information that you guys can provide in order to find out whether there are better alternatives? The postcode is: CT3 1BJ

Any help is appreciated!

Do you have an area in mind that you "have to" move too? i.e. in Kent possibly near Wingham,. Basically a slightly different area with a better connection you could move too?

We've made an offer on a house in Wingham, so that's where we'll go :)

How good are you at running fibre?

I'm sorry, I don't understand this question (although the answer is probably 'Not good at all') :( Can you clarify, please?

fibre-optic cable from your house to the telephone pole/cable outside. Consider a BT iPlate if the wiring is old otherwise - itll knock out the bell ring in old analog phones (driiing driiing) which causes interference to BB. Also check the master socket is a split socket (half way down theres a horizontal line accross the cover) and the bottom bit comes off to fit ur iplate, then the front botyom half goes back over it. I saw speed increase of 1.5mbps to 5.5mbps/6mbps. Now i have a special bt filter installed by them but the iplate was used for 9 months and it works!

Sorry for late reply and thanks for yours. I honestly don't think I will be able to do the stuff that involves installing fibre-optic cable from house to pole. Is that something that someone from BT/Virgin/other ISP provider might assist with?

I also had a quick tinternet look at the BT iPlate and it does seem to work for a lot of people. I shall certainly bear it in mind.

Well, other suggestions are welcome too! :) (I just don't want a scenario where I have a new, high-end computer with a crappy broadband connection...)

Bumping this topic a bit :) Just been to see the house that we've made an offer on and it is absolutely gorgeous! But, but, but... the broadband situation doesn't look too good. (No real help from existing owners about speed and stuff since they don't know much about this stuff.) I can't really see myself investing in a high-end computer without having a decent connection. :(

Anyway, for the more knowledgeable of you out there, is there anything you can make of these images?

As before, all help is appreciated!

Fibreoptic cabling is being rolled-out across the country over the next year or two. With the broadband speeds you quote, I'd imagine that the area is already high on the list of priorities for BT. I have only slightly better speeds myself and my exchange is being upgraded this month (can't wait! :) ).

Is Wingham the name of the closest telephone exchange?
Try this link and see when that area is scheduled for upgrade: Race to Infinity.
You will need to navigate around the place and come to the information which is relevant to you.

Looks like you're going to be limited to a 0.5mb/s connection :(

Yeah, and that is like going back 15 years in time :S

Lucky you! And yes, Wingham is the exchange. Only about 15% have voted for BT Infinity... Don't think that is a figure that will have BT spend money on Wingham :(

I guess I will just have to look and see what the actual speeds will be. I have really looked forward to this new computer of mine but this debacle with the broadband have made me think twice about it. I still have hope though! :D
