Blu Ray Drives & Included Software

Hi all,

Excuse this rather daft question (explanation to follow) but do laptops that come with Blu Ray drives include the necessary software required to play Blu Rays (Cyber Link etc)?

Explanation: My Vortex 4 came with a Blu Ray drive (no markings on the drive itself though) but no software to actually play Blu Rays (or at least no backup software to reinstall with Windows 8 itself).

I purchased my laptop through Ebuyer (who quote PCS as offering the support) and they have responsed to my enote that no software is included with the drive.

To me this sounds off. What is the point in including the drive if no software is included to take advantage of the drive itself?

Before I go back to ask what Ebuyer are playing at, I just want to get some opions from owners of Blu Ray equipped laptops.

As a couple of additional points;

- My old Asus N55SL came with a Blu Ray drive and the software (on disc & preinstalled) to play Blu Rays.
- The laptop was advertised as having a Blu Ray drive and words to the effect of "Watch Blu Ray Films etc"

Not every blu-ray drive will come with software to play blu-ray movies. I would guess its a specified addition if its included and most of PCS blu-ray's I would guess were OEM and would not include such software.

My blu-ray in my PC did not come with blu-ray movie software for example (or if it did, I've not found it in the welcome pack.....)

Although if eBuyer were advertising that you could watch blu-ray films etc. I'd certainly ask them how you'd go about doing that :)

EDIT: After seeing Vanthus' post I'm gonna have to go re-check my welcome pack to make sure I've not 'missed it' for the last year! *facepalm

Blu Ray Drives from PCS have software included, mines was Cyberlink.
If you look at "Other Features Included As Standard" under your chosen specification it states,
"CD/DVD/BLURAY viewing & authoring software is included with all DVD Writers/BD Drives."

Thanks both. (& Keynes) :)

I think I will double check my welcome pack (already been through it, but can't hurt to double check) and then go back to Ebuyer. I think I will quote the part of the advertisement which mentions about the ability to watch Blu Rays etc.

I've seen a couple of instances where people didn't receive the Blu-Ray software disc, but if they phone PCS they will send it out,not sure after a year though.

I've done quite a bit of research about free blu-ray software players, and the conclusion I've come to is they just don't exist,no players other than authorized BD players like cyberlink Power DVD for example should be able to play commercial blu-ray discs naturally. This is not an issue of codec, it’s about copy-protection (DRM) although some can play Blu ray rips.
There are hacks and tweaks on some free players like VLC that can make it possible to play blu-ray disks, but with limited options and limited success.
