Black screen of death

My new pc arrived Monday (yay!) and I got it all set up and running yesterday and started my review. Today I load up with no problem install the new windows updates then whilst thats doing its thing leave for maybe an hour to cook dinner but I came back to a black screen.

Nothing seems to clear it so I shutdown leave it for a bit then try again, it comes up with start up repair recommended so I select that no problem wait for the magic. Start up repair then comes up with 'Do you want to restore your system using system restore?' with two options 'restore' and 'cancel' but I cannot select either using the keyboard or mouse. I get the same result in safe mode and skipping the start up repair just leads me to the black screen.

The only changes I made today were installing the updates, before then I had no problems so I'm not sure if this had anything to do with it.

Would really appreciate any advice as I won't be able to contact PCS via phone until next week at the earliest. Thanks!

Best do a clean install.Pressing f8 with the os disc inserted should bring you to the option to boot from os disc.
Instructions on how to do a clean install are given in the welcome booklet.

I too have been experiencing this, and attempted to sort it out. I have followed the notes in the Welcome Book Page 16 and followed the 1 - 4 in Page 12. This didn't resolve the problem so I thought I might do a complete clean install, but got to where it asked for a System Image, which I couldn't supply as I do not know what it is or how I get it. So I went back to putting the Windows 7 disk in the drive after switching on an pressing f8. Eventually I did arrive back at the Desktop, and was able to get onto the Internet. The various steps to do this I didn't record, but will do next time. The Blue Screen comes up and disappears too quickly to read what it says. If someone can tell me how to stop that going by I would be most obliged, and also what I do about System Image in case I decide to lose all my files by reinstalling Windows 7. Thank you in advance. John

If the PC restarts too quick for you to read the bsod, disable automatic restart.to do this type SYSDM.CPL in the Start Search box.
Click the "Advanced" tab and click the "Settings" button under "Startup and Recovery"
Uncheck the option Automatically Restart.
To do a system image backup you will need either a second hard drive or an external hard drive.
In control panel click on "backup and restore"

Thanks for the help and reply, glad I had to re-install now as a last resort instead of further down the line!
