Black Myth: Wukong

Wonder if this will become the next 'Crysis' or 'The Last of Us' or 'Hogwarts', as it looks like RT will only be worth using if you have an RTX GPU, and if you want more than 60FPS then a 4080/4090 will be needed. Forget it if you run an AMD GPU as a 7900XTX gets about the same miserable results as an RTX4060...and this is at 1080p. It's even bringing the 4090 to it's knees at 4k (if you don't use FG or DLSS).

I can see everyone seriously reducing the RT and play around general graphic quality settings to get this to play at an enjoyable & smooth framerate ;)

The 4090 only delivering 90fps at 1080p is absolutely brutal.

Nice excuse to upgrade my rig though.
To a 9800X3D and a RTX9090 ;)

Just doing some benchmarks on my system (3440x1440p) and I'm wondering if the RT setting is actually working (or turning off)? If this is the performance in basically what is a cinematic cutscene, then it's going to crawl with any action taking place.

There is no DLSS off option, so I'm putting them at 100% which it says is DLAA only (75% = DLSS Quality). Also noticed that the benchmark doesn't have HDR, so everything looks a bit 'muddy'.

a) Cinematic, FG = off, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100% (i.e. DLAA)
63 FPS (max 72 FPS / min 53 FPS)
a) Cinematic, FG = off, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 100%
35 FPS (max 41 FPS / min 26 FPS)
c) Cinematic, FG = off, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 75% (i.e. DLSS Quality)
61 FPS (max 71 FPS / min 49 FPS)
d) Very High, FG = off, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 100%
38 FPS (max 45 FPS / min 31 FPS)

e) Very High, FG = off, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 75%
66 FPS (max 78 FPS / min 53 FPS)
f) Very High, FG = on, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 75%
108 FPS (max 128 FPS / min 90 FPS)
g) Very High, FG = on, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 25% (ultra-performance, lots of flickering edges, dithering)
164 FPS (max 169 FPS / min 83 FPS)
h) Very High, FG = off, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 25%
110 FPS (max 128 FPS / min 84 FPS)

i) High, FG = off, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 100%
40 FPS (max 48 FPS / min 33 FPS)
j) Medium, FG = off, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 100%
43 FPS (max 50 FPS / min 35 FPS)
k) Low, FG = off, RT = very high, DLSS scaling = 100%
44 (max 50 FPS / min 36 FPS)
l) Cinematic, FG = off, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
63 FPS (max 72 FPS / min 53 FPS)
m) Very High, FG = off, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
68 FPS (max 78 FPS / min 57 FPS)
n) High, FG = off, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
91 FPS (max 107 FPS / min 74 FPS)
o) Medium, FG = off, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
114 FPS (max 143 FPS / min 85 FPS)
p) Low, FG = off, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
143 (max 176 FPS / min 96 FPS)
q) Cinematic, FG = on, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
102 FPS (max 115 FPS / min 88 FPS)

r) Very High, FG = on, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
110 FPS (max 126 FPS / min 92 FPS)
s) High, FG = on, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
141 FPS (max 157 FPS / min 123 FPS)
t) Medium, FG = on, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
167 FPS (max 190 FPS / min 140 FPS)
u) Low, FG = on, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 100%
199 FPS (max 226 FPS / min 163 FPS)
...and just for fun, all 'performance-oriented' settings maxed out...
z) Low, FG = on, RT = off, DLSS scaling = 25%
299 FPS (max 339 FPS / min 152 FPS)

Well, I'm looking for my next 'big' game as I'm just finishing Ghost of Tsushima (trying to find all the missing artefacts, etc), and I'm not sure I'll rush to do New Game+ as I don't think there are any/many alternative paths to change the story anyway...just don't want to pay a premium for a new game and then have to wait months for it to be truly playable as it was meant to be played (i.e. high/very high + RT).

How long has Ghost taken so far going through the whole thing?

Probably not the fastest, as I like to explore the whole map to open up fast-travel before I get too deep into quests...but about 80 hours and 50 of 77 achievements (although even when complete I'll only be at about 70 of 77, as some of them are NG+ only, or require completing exact combos an exact number of times against a specific type of enemy, or competing against a 'rival' to beat their score in something...and "ain't nobody got time for dat" ;)

...although just realised Cat Quest 3 came out on the 8th August (my Steam wishlist didn't remind me), so that's something I could use to fill the gap.

I’m still trying to upskill myself on a suitable Linux distro for gaming, really getting tired of windows

This looks absolutely stunning, even without RT on, but seeing the side-by-sides in that video actually had me letting out an audible “woah”.

Extremely impressed with the fact that there’s a benchmark tool to see how well you can run the game, I wish more devs did this.

Less impressed was my 3080, who I don’t think has ever worked so hard (or got so hot!)

It doesn’t look like I’d be able to play with RT on (circa 40 fps) and I simply refuse to play this game on anything but high settings (visual snob) after seeing what it looks like, but I can’t decide whether to get it now or to wait until I upgrade.

Well, based on the benchmark tool, and if/when I eventually buy it, I'm planning on running it on Very High + RT + DLSS Quality (i.e. 75%) (along with those HU optimisation settings) - which shows I should get around 72FPS average.

I get a rock solid 22fps on those settings. :ROFLMAO:

It's been quite fun playing around with it this evening. Can get a good 85 fps average on very high, but any kind of ray tracing and fps tanks on the 3080.

It's the path tracing I think, that's the stuff that really drops it to a crawl.

Is this the first game with proper path tracing?

Given this is inspired by the Chinese novel Journey to the West and it needs a hefty system to run, I might just play Enslaved: Odyssey to the West which is a looser adaptation of the original novel and runs on UE3, so is far less taxing!
