If you're going for the i7-960, go for a multiple of 3 for the RAM, the i7-900 series use triple channel memory so multiples of 3 work better than multiples of 2

Though, to be honest I'd probably go for the i5-2500 or i7-2600 instead since its newer tech (at which point the 8 gig is a perfectly good amount of RAM).

If you're planning on SLI'ing at some point you might want to think about a bigger power supply.

educate me but what is crossfire/sli?

Using two of the same graphics cards linked together to get more graphics power :)
Crossfire is AMD, SLI is NVida
It's a nice cheapish way to upgrade your graphics power later on, cos you just buy another card which is the same as the one you've got already, but by that point its probably somewhat cheaper.

in my view a single power house gpu like the 570 or 580 should last you some good long time of gaming. multi gpu setups are optional or in down the line helpful but a single gpu should conquer all of todays games with fine visuals and performance.

i would recommend a sandy setup; this setup will blast the 960 and is upgrade potential in future but if you wish for SLI or a more power hungry gpu in future then you may want to swap the psu to a 850w psu to cope with the power draw from it.

This is what you should consider for you gaming along with everyday use:

4gb is plenty of ram for gaming and general use and can always be upgraded easily down the road if needed.

I also take it that you chose to not have an OS in the spec?

gotcha, so which 2 graphic cards would you recommend running alonsgide the i7-2600 and what power supply would you recommend?

who is winning the war between amd and sli?

Well I'd always say get the best single card you can now, and then later you can SLI/Crossfire them if/when needed.

Personally I like NVidia better, but everyone has their own preferences :)

No, i didnt mean the hard drive when i said 4GB, i stated Ram along the line :)

I know you need the 1TB hard drive so i popped it in the spec. Im saying 4GB Ram is plenty to keep the system smooth and will cover your gaming along with everyday use. you can upgrade the Ram to 8GB at a later date. I popped in 4GB to lower the price total and made it under the £1000 mark budget.

Yes, OS(Operating System) as in Windows 7.

what does the k mean at the end of the cpu names i.e. i5 2500k and i7 2600k?

and how are they better different to the standard i5 2500 and i7 2600?

honestly get the i5 you wont need or use the extra on the i7, if your going to sli a 570 then youll need the 750w PSU.
as to the Nvidia/AMD its intirely down to you, personally id go for Nvidia, i like to stuff you get with them (mainly Physix) but its down to you really.

well that's the recommended PSU from PCS, because of the 20% allowance but if you look around on the web you'll find that many, many people are running SLI'd 570s with 750w PSU with no problems at all
