So Windows backup is not working for me, giving some reason to do with 400MB zips files.
I don't buy that; I think it's just being mardy.
How do you guys backup? Do you spend money on it?

I use an specific 500GB HDD for the backup.
And use Windows backup, it's free!

Windows7 own backup utility has always worked for me,however,if it's not working for you,I would suggest Norton Ghost or Acronis, but they are not free.

Yes, I prefer buying an affordable soft for like purposes. It seems like more reliably in regards to keeping my important info and dear heart pictures especially if you have some questions or hardships unfortunately. Free soft is good idea but often it's truncated and tech support may be poor in relation to rapidity and quality. (IMHO)
I use @Max SyncUp to back up and to sync my pictures between laptop-desktop (it's very convenient as many pictures on different machines from cameras, mobile phones).

I use Cobian Backup. Completely free, and supports both traditional backups (e.g., differential, incremental), as well as syncing to a separate device.

windows backup with a dedicated HDD or partition to backup on has never failed me
(but then i only have done full system images & not individual files folders)

But for full pc backups / images it has never failed me once :)
