Audio production laptop spec queries (octane iv)

Hello.

I have been browsing PC specialist for a good few months as i do as much research as possible before i upgrade my system.
I am planning to build a pc primarily for Professional Audio production. I know here they are tailor made to be a gaming laptops but the specs are essentially the same if not more demanding in every area except gpu.

I like the idea of being relatively mobile but having the same power as a tower system.

This is the laptop specification i have had my eye on:

Chassis & DisplayOctane Series: 17.3" Matte 4K IPS LED Widescreen (3840x2160) (No G-Sync)
Processor (CPU)Intel® Core™i7 Six Core Processor i7-8700k (3.7GHz) 12MB Cache
Memory (RAM)32GB Corsair 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 16GB)
Graphics CardNVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 OC 1480 MHz - 6.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1
1st Hard Disk 500GB Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
2nd Hard Disk 1TB SERIAL ATA III 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 32MB CACHE (7,200rpm)
M.2 SSD Drive 1TB SAMSUNG SM961 M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3200MB/R, 1800MB/W)
Memory Card Reader
Integrated 6 in 1 Card Reader (SD /Mini SD/ SDHC / SDXC / MMC / RSMMC)AC Adaptor1 x 330W AC AdaptorPower Cable1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Thermal Paste: the better one (£9) accidentally copy and pasted the standard option
Sound CardIntel 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone JackBluetooth & Wireless
GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® AC-8265 M.2 (867Mbps, 802.11AC) +BT 4.0, vPROUSB Options
4 x USB 3.0 Ports + 2 x USB 3.1 Type C Ports

my main issue is Temperature concern. i know the octane has an advanced fan system but i would really appreciate some estimates on heat output. i would also be willing to underclock the GPU (not the cpu) if that can bring it down. Would this laptop be safe and cool enough to last me 3/4 years? Would this rig remain cool enough under pressure of Music audio workstations (if anyone has that knowledge)? or is it safer to forget mobility and get a tower solution. How different would a tower be with lets say a corsair h100i v2.

Thankyou all.

You could get a tower PC to run much, much cooler and quieter. It would probably be cheaper too. And you could have 2 PCIe NVMe SSDs (e.g. 2 SM961s), instead of the SM961 and the other SSD being an 850 Evo.

However the Octane should still work fine, and keep going for many years. There's no guarantee beyond the warranty you buy, since electronic components can kick it at any time, in any system. Or they can keep going almost indefinitely.

A lot of Octane owners undervolt their CPU, which makes a significant difference to temps while letting them still have full performance.

I've not looked at this chassis specifically but it seems it's often the CPU that the higher end Clevo gaming chassis struggle to keep cool, rather than the GPU - and the GTX 1060 is quite a bit cooler than the 1070 and 1080 anyway.

thanks for the response mate :)

im still quite undecided (the portability is quite important as it gives me access to nicer studios with better speakers etc)

i think if i was to get an octane id most certainly get the longest warranty to make sure the parts can be replaced if anything happens.
My only other query would be, is there any actual long term affects that you know of with a laptop running hotter than a tower system? IE aslong as its not throttling does temperature affect cpu degradation much if its a difference of lets say 15 degrees on average or so.

thankyou

Temperatures will affect lifespan, but I would be surprised if the laptop's ultimate demise was due to the CPU having kicked it early due to running hotter.

I don't have any strong evidence base for saying that - it's just an impression based on not really seeing people post here to complain of CPU failures in their high end PCS laptops.

Note that the Octane can have the CPU and GPU removed, they're not soldered on like with other models, so out of warranty replacements for those components are much more viable.
