6990M will be many months away - we are still placing orders for 6970M. Stock will probably land at Alienware before us, but do you want to pay the extra £500 for it? :)

Damn, now I have to wait for this and a matte screen for the 15.6" Vortex II to become available =(
Things to remember, if you always wait for the next new awesome sounding thing, you will never get your PC :)

Very true but the 580M/6990M have been on the cards for a while now.

I'd be surprised if any new mobile gfx cards are released this year (unless nvidia release a 585M to combat the 6990M which still wont be very good in terms of price vs performance).

Anyway, I just need a gaming lappy in time for BF3/Diablo 3 so have a bit of time on my hands to play the waiting game.

6990M has been announced for early september, and if i know ATI right, it will be cheaper than GTX 580M. Notebookcheck.net actually posted benchmark results of the 6990M yesterday, and showed that the GTX580M is slightly faster, but i think they removed it again.

for the record, AMD claims that the 6990M will be the fastest mobile GPU in the world.

EDIT: It seems notebookcheck.net just updated their page with new benchmark results. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html 6990M is the fastest!

I have just ordered the 6970m for the vortex 2, would it be possible to upgrade to the 6990m in lets say 10 months time? will it be an MXM 3.0b card? would it work / fit? I have heard that there are two types of motherboards, one for Nvidia and one for AMD, so you cant put a 480 in a amd system but you can upgrade with AMD... is this correct?

Thanks

We have just received some benchmark information and the GTX 580M wins:

3D mark Vantage (P)

GTX 580M - expected 15,000. Actual result: 16,263
HD 6990M - expected 14,000. Actual result: 14,273

With regards to upgrading from a 6970M to 6990M, this may be possible but it cannot be guaranteed. Both the Nvidia and AMD cards that come supplied with the Vortex II will use MXM sockets but buying in a card will not be cheap and fitting it is not easy.

* Please note we did not carry out these tests ourself, but they were carried out on the Vortex II.

It will be more expensive than the 6970M, perhaps £40 - £50 more initially. Perhaps by October/November though the pricing will be flat.

Regarding sourcing the cards - it's likely that we will be able to source the cards for upgrades, but I cannot promise anything.

FYI: Dell US has put the 6990M available in their Alienware M18X. From a standard installation to a Dual 6990M is 500$ extra. From a standard installation to Dual GTX 580M is 1200$ extra. Just to give you some idea about pricing :)

If this turns out to be a possibility it sounds like a sweet upgrade :).
