Are Sound Cards worth it?

Is it really worth the money to upgrade to a better sound card? Is the quality in sound that much different? I have 7.1 surround sound headphones, but I'm still not sure whether to go for a better one if the default sound card is good enough?

I've never listened to sound on a different sound card so I have no clue what the difference will be!

The headphones will have their own built in soundcard so bypass any in the PC anyway.

But no, on board sound is just as good these days.
