Hello all - a bit of advice on this spec would be very much appreciated

Uses:

2D and 3D animation
Video Processing
Unreal Games engine

Also I am still trying to decide whether to go for a laptop or a PC. Impossible question I know but bearing in mind my uses how much better would a PC of a similar price perform?

Nope with work like that you'd be miles off better with a PC
the only real reason that justifies getting a laptop is the need for portability and space i guess :)
a PC of similar spec to a laptop will come out much cheaper

if you give me a sec ill knock up a sec for comparison

Do you need keyboard mouse monitor etc....?

Also i notice u specced a small HDD do u have an external on eyou will use for storage?

Nem speaks the truth. Desktop is definately the way to go. For that sort of cash, you will get a VERY nice machine, loads of CPU and RAM, nice shiny new power supply.....mmmmmmmm.....the smell of that oil when you first turn it on... :)

Also, much better GFX off course, and probably SLI'd as well :)

It all depends on the extras needed
If that budget were spent purely on the tower
Or if it were to be split between tower and peripherals would make a big difference!!

Again, True you wise old man :D

To give you an idea, early last year I bought a Quad Core, new PSU - modular (Hyper), New GFX, New Mobo, New Ram - installed in old tower unit, cost less than £300 :D

Many thanks for your advice - on reflection I agree that PC is the only way to go....but to keep things tidy I'll start a new posting for that
