AMD Radeon HD 8970m

Going by the 'news' circulating the web it's only going to be a re-brand of the 7970M with higher clocks, as opposed to a new architecture or anything like that.

Will still be interesting to see what kind of extra performance it can offer though.

amd say 7.5% faster then 680m but on what games? how much quicker will it be in 6 months with driver updates? significantly more expensive? will pcs even stock it?

There does seem to be a lot of new components being hyped up and with a hefty price to boot, then it turns out the performance increase over the previous model is negligible,or maybe I'm just being cynical.

I kinda agree. look at AMD's bulldozer chips were said to be awesome... whilst they are good value they are not as awesome as the hype.

but nout worse than buying a system then a month later its "out of date" or "not the latest"

Hmm yeah definitely, it just seems to be the way it's going now and slowing right down (at least for desktops, laptops slowing as well but least they get significant boosts on the integrated graphics).

I mean if I think back as far as I can remember wasn't it like the Pentium 4 series, then the Core 2 Duo/Quad (massive leap forward) then the first i7s (huge progress again) and ever since Sandy Bridge which was a nice step up again it's started to become very marginal. :(

I'd still agree with you for graphics cards but really not that big a benefit to get Ivy or Haswell over Sandy which is a bit of a shame, I mean if you already own it. What are the margins, 10% or so better now? :(

A real disappointment. Higher clock speeds and a little power save boost make this not worth its asking price.

Got to admit we are not going to see anything really amazing for the next 2-3 years best buy a PS4 and enjoy for 2 years then go back to PC's if worth it.

Its definitely worth it :) - when compared to current technology there may be nothing 'amazing' coming out that is new, but the latest PC kit is still going to kick the PS4/Xbox 720 (or whatever they end up calling it) out of the water. I'm yet to see a console on which its possible to play on three 3D screens at once and still beat 60FPS - but you can with a PC.

I have noticed this trend as well - rate of progress in domestic computing seems to be slowing somewhat. Rather than develop new architectures, GPUs have been bolted together and repackaged. Would anyone say that adding more processing cores is another example of this, or would that be classed as technical progression?

Is there any word on when we might be able to purchase the card through PCS? Also, if it is very similar to the 7970m as is suggested, do you think I'll be able to upgrade my Vortex II and stick one in there to replace my 6970m (I am able to upgrade to the 7970m at the moment). Also, do you think PCS will still stock some 7970ms after the release of the 8000m series cards?

For an official response you may need to contact PCS directly.
