I placed an order on Amazon for £227, opting for Express Delivery (Friday).
I then decided that I wanted a new Lamp for my desk to I contacted their live chat support and asked them to add a Lamp on to the order, costing another £10. I then asked the lady if the extra money would be automatically deducted from my account and she said yes.

I then check my bank balance 15 minutes later and they had took out over £450 from my account!

So I rushed onto the live support again and the man said that they took out the original £227, then when I added the lamp to the order, refunded that and took out another £237. I am so annoyed, as the refunded money won't be available for at least 3 days - plus the weekend, so Monday at the earliest. They are lucky that I am in no rush for the money. I am amazed as to why they did this. They could have simply took out the difference (£10.33 or something) rather than the stupid method they did.

/rage.

Not just Amazon that does it
Had something similar with Asda when having shopping delivered
Except I had to wait a week before the funds were released

Its actually quite common. I believe one of the reasons is that it is easier to track the payments that way. Rather that searching for random £5 here, £24 there, the original is refunded and a new amount charged.

This will all be in some Ts&Cs no doubt, which everyone blindly accepts :)

Same with Scan aswell. Ordered my new pc stuff (yay) 'forgot' to add on my monitor, so i created a new order and asked them to merge the two together. They said that all they can do is refund me the money (take 5 days to clear) then charge me for another monitor ontop of the other order.

Just going to have to wait the 5 days to be refunded :)
