Am I going to have to format?

My computer is about 8months old and in the last 2 weeks its been acting very strangely. Here is the list of issues:

After start up it takes another 1min or more to get connected to internet and sometimes wont do it until I open the browser. Also the browser occasional crash's and when I try to force close down through task manager the rest of the computer crashes and I cant do anything except force shutdown of entire PC through holding down the power button.

Not a moment ago I was trying to search something on the web and it wouldn't register my key strokes unless I did them one letter at a time and no more than two keys pressed within five seconds or so. If I attempted to type normally it wouldn't register and would stop responding for a while.

I tried to change the save location of shadowplay videos files from my ssd to my hdd and now in game the symbol has a red line through it and when I try to save footage it doesn't appear to save anywhere on my computer.
When I attempted to close the GeForce experience program it crashed then sent a stream of error messages across my screen as if it was like one of those old internet popup adds that would spam your screen all over.

I've done full system scans for viruses and such, nothing found. I would really not want to revert to factory settings or clean my computer of everything and do fresh installs. But if theres no other option.... I just don't want to download the 500gb of games I have or the 40gb of programs..... let alone the music, videos and all that.

If anyone has any ideas on whats going on or has an idea of how to get it back to how it was, (looked at system restore and theres nothing that would help me get back to a point that I know it was good at) I'd be very grateful.

From what you describe I would suggest that a completely clean reinstall of Windows is your best option if you don't think any of your restore points are good. Although, as keynes rightly says, it's worth a try. Pick the oldest restore point you have and restore to that, see whether that helps? If it doesn't then a clean reinstall is your only option.

To prevent your having to do this again be sure to take regular backups. I use Macrium Reflect to take images of my Windows drive (a SSD). You'll need to make an emergency boot CD or USB stick (Reflect can do that for you) and once that's done you can restore your system to the latest backup image quickly and easily even if it won't boot Windows.

Ok thanks, I was worried that would be my only option.

Is there a way to ring-fence certain programs so that I don't have to download them again?

There's a few things I would try before doing a clean install of the OS.
First check if the OS disk is running out of space this can cause all sorts of problems,if so try running CCleaner,
this may or may not help, you might need to uninstall some software or transfer some of the data files (music, videos etc) to another source.
might also help to defragment the HDD (don't defrag the SSD) with "Defraggler" from the same link.

Disable startup items in "System Configuration"
type msconfig in the Start Search box and then press enter.
On the startup tab disable items,I only ever have the anti-virus program enabled.

Also might be worth running a full scan with MalwareBytes
