Advice on this build?

EDIT- My budget can be up to around £1500

Is it worth using the I7k over the I5? As said I use my PC almost purely for gaming but I like to have other things open, EG netflix, chrome etc so I'd like to be able to have this happening without any side effects.

I have read that games like GTA prefer the I7 and more RAM.

Im also thinking of 970's SLI. I believe right now this is better in terms of price and FPS than a single 980?

Another thing, fan controllers, worth it or just a gimic?

Please forgive my ignorance I am very out of touch these days.

Hello, any advice on this would be appreciated as I am far out of date with PC's these days. I am upgrading from my laptop.

I will be using it as a gaming PC mostly. Games from WOW, GTAV, Dead Rising 3, Lords of the fallen and various others are what I am currently playing.

I like to usually have chrome open watching a film or something else whilst I am playing a game.

Ok so this is the PC I am currently looking at-

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4790k (4.0GHz) 8MB Cache
Processor Cooling
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler

Case
COOLERMASTER HAF 912 PLUS MID TOWER

Motherboard
ASUS® Z97-P: ATX, LG1150, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs

Memory (RAM)
16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X FURY DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz

Graphics Card
4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 970 - 1 DVI, 1 mHDMI, 3 mDP - 3D Vision Ready

Power Supply
CORSAIR 550W VS SERIES™ VS-550 POWER SUPPLY

1st Hard Disk
120GB KINGSTON HYPERX 3K SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 555MB/sR | 510MB/sW)

2nd Hard Disk
1TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 32MB CACHE

I think those are the main parts. Anything to change and why?

I'm not expecting world breaking performance but at least able to run the majority of games on high settings whilst being able to have chrome open with a tab or two watching something without lagging/FPS drops.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

I7-4790 (non-k) and triple copper heatpipe since overclocking is not really needed for gaming. You could also get 8gb ram (you could add more later on), caviar black as the secondary drive (faster) and if budget allows a 240gb ssd.

I would say at the new budget, it's worth considering the i7.

I have read that games like GTA prefer the I7 and more RAM.

Im also thinking of 970's SLI. I believe right now this is better in terms of price and FPS than a single 980?

At your budget, you may want to consider a single 980ti which has just been released and pretty much matches the Titan X but for half the price!!!

Another thing, fan controllers, worth it or just a gimic?

Gimick, not required, perhaps if you're seriously overclocking and need to keep an eye on temps then it may come in handy.

Ive had a quick look at the 980 TI it looks good for the price. Anyone else have any input? SLI 970's work out slightly cheaper than the 980 TI, I read on another forum next year there is expected to be some new kind of GPU's that will make anything currently out seem *obsolete*.

Is that just random babble or is the 980TI future proof for at least a couple of years? Also with the 980Ti will it be worth me investing in a 4k monitor? Thanks again.

The NVIDIA Pascal 1000 series, which will be the next after the current 900 series, is road-mapped for 2016. A recent leaky thing says they will out Q2 2016, i.e. by the middle of 2016. I can't see it being quite that soon but they may come out sometime in 2016. NVIDIA will certainly be disappointed if they can't release until 2017.
Pascal will utilise HBM2 memory. 'According to Nvidia’s estimates, graphics adapters based on “Pascal” architecture should deliver two to ten times higher performance than comparable graphics processors today in peak scenarios.'

It's not possible to know how quickly the gaming scene will change. I can't imagine any games being released that will run well only on Pascal (or the equivalent) until the middle of 2017 at least, and probably not until 2018. I think big games will increasingly try to be very scalable, like GTA V.
The most likely and nearest change will be the greater availability and affordability of 4k screens and one appropriate Pascal should be able to feed 4k with ease. It is still the case that one 980ti or Titan X will struggle to give you the max in all games at 4k.
In short, I don't think we will be left behind in the next 2 years with a 980ti.
