I'll be using the laptop for the next 3-4 years, so I am planning to spend a lot on it now to cope with changing technology!
I'll be using it for: University work, Gaming (not sure which games yet - however maybe Diablo 3, Counter Strike Source / GO), Possible video making/rendering of gameplay however this will be minimal use compared to the time spent gaming.

I've tried to balance the CPU / Ram as previously i was going to go for a much higher CPU. What are your thoughts on the build?
I plan to buy an external 1/2TB hard drive to store all media and non-essential stuff.

You could drop the CPU back a notch, as really for the money it's not worth the upgrade for gaming. The slight downgrade wont have a limiting effect even with that GPU and will still spit out very high FPS.

Those games you mention are not exactly that taxing on the GPU/CPU anyway so no need to wrry about it right now, but i know what your saying regarding the future, but i would still drop a notch on the CPU as that CPU is only 10% faster which isn't that much for the money.
