Hello! I'm hoping to upgrade from an old Toshiba satellite laptop that is seriously struggling but has served me faithfully, and I've decided to try and future proof myself for the next 10 years or so.

I don't require all bells and whistles, but I do need to be able to run photo and video editing software smoothly and quickly, and have plenty of storage.

Would this build suffice?

It would be a significant step up to an old laptop, but you'd more or less be stuck at that level as it's a 3 generation old processor and a platform that will not allow for any simple upgrades over the next 10 years (i.e. if you wanted a better GPU/CPU if you moved into video, etc.).

What's your budget? Is there any other significant use other than photo editing / processing? What software are you using?

I figured the improvement from the laptop would be more than enough to carry me through at least the next 10 to 15 years, I'm not looking to stay up to date as such. Would this combo not be good enough for video editing?

I'd mainly be using the Adobe suites to be honest

My budget is ideally below 2k Inc monitor

A little over budget but a far more sensible selection. There's so much potential with the budget, it would be a real shame to opt for such antiquated hardware. The upcoming GPU releases may give better value, but the lower tier cards tend to be a fair bit later so this is my best crack within the budget. I would have liked the 16GB 4060 Ti, but the budget wasn't there.

Video editing is multi-core biased, whereas Photoshop tends to be single-core biased.

So the CPU that's best for one is not necessarily the best for the other.

The later 7000 and 9000-series AM5 CPUs are upto 35-50% faster in multi-core than the Ryzen 5000 series, and about 10-15% faster in single-core, mainly due to the more efficient CPU platform.

These are interesting options, and thank you for your replies, it's appreciated.

I will tend to concentrate on stills photography as that's where my skill set lives, so video woukd be for smaller, tinkering projects so isn't the main consideration.

What makes for antiquated hardware in the build? And how old does something have to be to be considered antiquated these days? All genuine questions, from someone who is just starting to learn....

Anything that isn't current generation should be avoided. At the very least you want to be on the current platform (AM5). This allows you to get up to date should you wish to.

Starting on a platform that is no longer supported from an upgrade perspective makes it antiquated. The performance uplift from the 5700X to the 9600X is absolutely huge when it comes to photoshop. The new chips are top of the pile for performance.

Effectively paying similar money for less performance on a platform that can not support any upgrades and is using an previous generation of RAM doesn't make fiscal sense.
