Hi, what do you think about i7 6820HK with the GTX 1060 on DefianceIII 15" ? It is worth paying the extra money or 6700HQ would be more appropriate for this GPU, saving something for other components? Thank you
If it's just general gaming, I wouldn't expect the extra £90 to give anything like a proportionate return in performance. The GTX 1060 for laptops is somewhat weaker than its desktop counterpart, so you're still going to be GPU bound in most games most of the time.
The 6700HQ and 6820HK are pretty much identical apart from 3 points:
1. The 6820HK has 2mb extra L3 cache (8mb up from 6mb)
2. The 6820HK runs 100mhz faster
3. The 6820HK is unlocked
Now seriously, in all honesty, points 1 and 2 will make pretty much no perceptible difference in performance vs the 6700HQ. The true benefit is the fact the 6820HK is unlocked so you could overclock it - temperatures permitting, most people seem to settle on 4ghz which is 500mhz faster than the 6700HQ. This would provide a modest improvement in performance but nothing to write home about.
So the answer to your question, is the 6820HK worth the extra? That depends on if you can be bothered to put the time in to overclocking it correctly to provide a decent performance boost over the 6700HQ and also if the chassis can handle the extra heat produced by an overclocked 6820HK - which my bet would be "barely". If you're looking at the Defiance you'd definitely want the 17.3" which has the extra heatpipe on the cooler for example.
Personally I don't think it's worth the bother and I'd just go with the 6700HQ.
