4k gsync monitors

Hi all, i am getting a new pc as per previous post, which is going to be top end and used for gaming and music production, but thought would start a new thread as this is about monitors. Now, if getting a really top end pc with GEFORCE GTX 1080 Ti, you want to make sure the monitor is good and does it justice, or what is the point right?! So i was looking for a bit of guidance on what monitor to get to get the best out this graphics card?

My thoughts so far have been this below, about the right size (would not it any smaller) but i am not great with monitors, but i have read that g-sync is very good especially with this type of quality of card. Is this a 4k monitor below?

That is a WQHD resolution monitor, or what we would call (for lack of a better name) 2K.
FullHD resolution is 1920x1080 (or 1080p for short), and proper 4K is four times that, 3840x2160.

Now, the above has a refresh rate of 144Hz (goes higher with overclocking), but I don't think you can find such monitors at 4k resolution. Not yet anyway.
If you do go to 4K resolution, you will be stuck, for now, with a refresh rate of 60Hz, basically what a TV can offer.

The next closest thing would be a ultra-wide, which is like the one above, but wider. An example is the ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q, 3440x1440, G-Sync, and the refresh rate can be overclocked to 100Hz. There are other options at this form factor (21:9), all expensive.

So, to summarize:
-> 4K monitors have limited refresh rate (60Hz), which makes them amazing for work, but pretty weak for gaming. Examples: Acer XB280HK, Acer Predator XB271HK
-> next best thing are the ultrawide monitors, but these are still limited in refresh rate, and they are quite expensive. Examples: ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q, Acer Predator X34
-> affordable gaming monitors at WQHD resolution with great refresh rate (144Hz -> 165Hz), G-Sync. Examples: ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR, Acer Predator XB271HU, Dell S2716DG

Wow thank you for such a detailed response and clear outline, as think is some confusion surrounding this. So really, I think is best to maybe not have the top 1080 ti graphics card which really pushed for 4k capabilities, because the monitors really aren't ready for it yet. Best to save money I think get the normal one 1080 and get the gaming monitors that you suggested. Maybe in year or 2 potentially upgrade so can get best out of it all when the better monitors are out?

I'd be very tempted by a 4k monitor over 1440p high refresh, but that's in part as I prefer single player RPGs, some of which don't get on with higher refresh rates or end up getting CPU bound to a bit under 60 sometimes anyway.

I wouldn't say 4K monitors aren't ready yet. They are pretty good for gaming and I think many people will not manage to tell the difference between 60hz and 120hz, myself included, unless you are gaming competitively. The X34A has a refresh rate 100hz and it is a pretty good monitor.

You could save £120 by going with 3200MHz RAM. There won't be all that many games where you find yourself saying "Darn, I wish I'd spend £120 more on 4000MHz".

You can knock £80 off with the PM961 SSD.

:) will pay it off over 12 months. I already have a 29 inch curved samsung monitor which connects to my laptop, which i want to keep that monitor. So i was wanting to get the new monitor underneath the monitor i have, so 29 inch directly above the 34 inch. I am always a bit cautious with monitor arms, so i am a bit stuck on getting one arm for the 29inch which is going to be tall enough, to then clear the 34 inch one underneath to which i also want on a arm to save depth space. can you recommend on any arms for this scenario for me please? proper struggling :(

How much is the Asus monitor? The X34A is as good and you could probably get it under £900.

I used to have two monitors on my desk, using a Duronic DM352 dual arm.
Now, having bought a new 27in gaming monitor, I bought an 80cm extension and raised the two sufficiently to fit the new monitor underneath, and to the right, leaving enough space on the left for my laptop.
