Hi everyone,

I like to call out to all owners with the P170SM (17.3" Vortex IV), and ask for your opinions or help.

to begin with this laptop is excellent, I don't get any problems and im very happy.

However im having some issues with the secondary hard drive sata slot located under the DVD/RW drive.

Anyone put in a secondary drive yet, running in a NON-raid configuration?

I've put in a Seagate SSHDD 750GB into my secondary bay and all works fine until I put some load on the drive, it disconnects from the system and powers off..... no device in device manager, no device in the bios!! only happens when the drive is stressed. in the windows event viewer its showing a Adapti driver error.

I've changed this drive out for another one as I said to them its faulty, now ive been given a replacement I still get the problem... so its not the drive but either a motherboard/firmware/software issue.

The configuration I run is:

Windows 7 64bit Pro
i7 4710MQ
8GB Kingston Hyper X Black DDR3L
120GB Kingston Hyper X SSD
Seagate Hybrid 8GB SSD 750GB SSHD
AMD R290X 4GB DDR5

anyone having problems with a secondary drive?

im running latest version of all software, drivers from intel etc etc

im an advanced user 10yrs IT Support so I like to know if there is any known issues. I have a few ideas but I like to know if its just a isolated issue or a more common one?

Not sure its a common issue, though I doubt many people are running a 2nd drive to root out if it is a common issue.

May be a motherboard/power issue. Best bet is ring up the call centre IMO. They can then arrange for an RMA for proper testing, if you took out silver warranty this will be free, if not you will need to pay the postage.

I've got a secondary ssd in mine without any issues. Have you updated the firmware on the sshd?

i havnt updated the sshd firmware yet, that's on my theory with compatability with the chipset.

I'll flash the drive and see if this is a fix, only happens when the drive is stressed, for example virtualisation or installing and copying files onto same drive etc bottleneck

its strange, it just internally powers off and reports driver problem in windows. firmwares a a good start, next Seagate technical support. i will also fit another brand and spec hard drive to see if the fault replicates.

i will also see if pcs support can help too, i have silver warranty yes and will soon update to platinum

Might be worth posting your bios version also, I'll see if it's the same as mine, perhaps it's an old version for some reason.
