17.3" Vortex IV - Would like some advice on processor and other specs.

Hey guys,

So I am looking to buy my first proper gaming rig, and I have decided to make it portable and have opted for the Vortex IV. Now I practically have decided my budget will be £1,500 although I will happily go a bit higher because I'd rather buy what I want and not have a reason to make me want to spend this sort of money again for a while.

I would like some help with some small decisions, based on what I have seen around these forums and just general things I do not know about, if you don't mind.

  1. What screen would you recommend? I have heard Matte has less glare but also less brightness, but have noticed many of you have opted for Glossy.
  2. I must've had tunnel vision because in my head the faster clock speed on a processor the better, but it appears as though many of you have opted for the i7-4700MQ, which is the slowest one. Why is this? Should I not be concerned so much about clock speed and just opt for any as long as it is a Quad-Core i7 at least?
  3. What are the advantages of Kingston Hyper-X Genesis memory? If I opt for just 8Gb (2x4Gb) memory for now, would I be able to add more at a later date? I am pretty sure you can, as I have in the past, but this is my first PC Specialist order.
  4. Is the choice between AMD Radeon HD 8970M and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M purely choice or is it always better to go for the better benchmark-scored graphics card? Does the CPU affect GPU/graphics performance?
  5. If I opt for a SSD drive or a Hybrid drive, am I correct in thinking I wouldn't require an mSATA SSD Cache?

Remember, this is for a gaming rig, which I will also use for some heavy applications, such as editing and recording 1080p HD Footage, so please answer with that in mind.

Thank you in advance.

2- for gaming the gpu is more important for most games, you wouldn't get any issues with the i7-4700mq. For editing you will benefit from a higher clock speed CPU but with the mobile range a slight increase carries a significant rise in cost.
3-no noticeable difference for gaming.
4- the CPU affects some games that are more processor bound but not significantly compare to more expensive CPUs than the i7-4700mq.
5- you wouldn't need a mSATA SSD.

The best value for money at that budget is the Vortex IV in the reviews section. It being a review means there's no choice in the specs... but if you build something similar in the confirgurator you'd be looking at a much more expensive laptop.

Oh, wow, thanks a lot guys for your responses.

Thank you for pointing the reviews section out to me, I didn't realise you could order that exact spec for cheaper. The Vortex IV 770XS (third one down) seems the best one for my specs. Yes it has the i7-4700MQ rather than the i7-4800MQ, but we have established that it isn't a big deal for gaming, and it's Windows 8 (which I'd like to try.) Plus, for the same price, your Primary SSD Drive is the 120GB KINGSTON HYPERX 3K SSD which reads and writes at a much quicker rate than the other Vortex IV at the top of the page. I'm impressed. I'm about to go to the configurator and see how much I would save :)

EDIT: It turns out I'll be saving £201. Thanks again!

Just to clarify, both the Vortex review builds are the same laptop... It's just been reviewed by two different companies!

I'm pretty sure if you order it but the ring PCS they would probably alter things like OS choice, warranties, softwares etc given they build review orders from scratch. They just won't alter hardware without removing the £201 discount.
