1080P or 1440P Monitor?

I've just purchased a PC from PC Specialist and am looking for help on choosing a monitor. Specifically 1080p vs 1440p.

Here are the specs, I'm on mobile at the moment and can update the thread later with an official PCS confit file.

Case: Corsair 4000D
CPU: i7-10700K
PSU: 850W Corsair
RAM: 32GB Corsair 3200mhz (2x16GB)
GPU: ASUS ROG STRIX GTX 1080 (my own GPU am not purchasing from PC'S)
SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 2TB
HDD: 4TB Seagate

I've been torn between 2 models ASUS VG258Q or ASUS ROG PG279QR.

Any advice on what my GPU can realistically run? GSYNC is a must. If you have any alternative advice for a monitor, I'd be happy to hear it.

Thanks

First things first - AMD, not Intel. Why? Link below ;)

Secondly, when you build your AMD, please include a link to your specs:

VG258Q is poor - it's a TN panel, while ASUS ROG PG279QR is 1440p and IPS but 4ms!

You really need to decide if you go with 1080p or 1440p as it changes everything - different GPU needed.

Lower res are CPU bound while higher res is GPU bound, your GPU is a bit out of date.

GTX 1080 should be able to run modern games at playable 60+ FPS but not enough to benefit from high refresh rate monitors. Overall I'd go with the 1440p monitor so you don't have to upgrade your monitor in the future if you do plan on upgrading your GPU at any point in time.

What monitor do you use at the moment, if any?

My current dead pc is a i7-4470 with a 1080 gpu and I use a 1440, I was happy with 60fps on most games I play. However it does depend on a couple of things.

Sort of games you like playing
Are you happy with the fps being at 60, or are you one of those people who like 250 fps?
Are you planning on getting a new GPU at any point in the near future? that 1080 is the bottle neck now for gaming.

If you are thinking of getting a new GPU then I suggest 1440 and make due with it until you get the GPU, then you'll love it!

I don't necessarily aim for 250 fps but I usually like to aim for 100. I would potentially upgrade to a 3080 in a year or so after saving a bit/stock comes back.

No monitor at the moment. Sold it before coming from NA to EU.

Was thinking of getting both a 1080p and 1440p monitor but not sure if that is overkill.

Big picture: If you’re planning on having a two monitor scenario in the gaming world the suggested setup would be for a good quality 1440p/4K screen as the one you’re doing the business on, and then you can have any old monitor as your second screen. If the second is the one you use to view your streams or just have YouTube vids open on then it really doesn’t matter what it is.

But practically, if you’re running a GTX 1080 it’s going to struggle on anything above medium settings at 1440p. Stick with higher refresh 1080p until the next upgrade 👍

Thoughts on this one? IPS/GSYNC/240HZ until I decide to make the GPU upgrade for 1440p?

Also what's the best screen size for 1080p? I've heard that 27" is usually too large for 1080p

Pound for pound, this is the best 1080p monitor available for the price point. 144Hz refresh rate and IPS panel, it’s the bee’s knees 👍

Hmm I think ideally I would like a monitor with GSYNC, will add it to the list though for when I make my decision, thanks

It’s FreeSync, so it’s totally compatible 👍

I don’t mean to sound obtuse but I’d actually suggest you do a bit more homework on monitors. I wouldn’t just chuck a random screen in there for the sake of it, I linked that one because it’s really good.

Quick update, I managed to find a very slightly used 1440p ASUS PG279Q monitor for €450 so I'm very happy. I had the previous model and this will future proof me for when I upgrade my GPU eventually.

Thanks for all your advice, greatly appreciate it!

I have this exact same model of monitor with a 1080 card :), can't wait for my new build to come with a 3080 in it though so I can actually get some decent use out of the monitor ;)
