PCSPECIALIST Help with diagnosing dead PC

Thanks Scott. I tried your suggestion. Switching on without CPU and RAM results in same things: it powers up, powers down immediately, and repeats. So yes, definitely the motherboard wouldn't you say? This has been my fileserver, and it's hard to find a current motherboard that I can afford...

PCSPECIALIST Help with diagnosing dead PC

Thank you. I tested the PSU with my multimeter and all the voltage readings are correct for all the pins on the 24 pin ATX connector, and on the 8pin connector to the CPU. Can I now assume that the PSU is fully functioning, and that it's an issue with the motherboard/cpu? Cheers Mark

PCSPECIALIST Help with diagnosing dead PC

OK thank you. That's good to know. I'll get on to Scan for that one. I do have an original Dr Power from about 1995 :-) but it doesn't test the 8 pin 12V connector for the CPU.

PCSPECIALIST Help with diagnosing dead PC

Thanks, yes, I used one of these... but there seems to be an opinion on the internet that you can't really test a PSU unless it's under load, and none of these testers really provide a load, as I understand it.

PCSPECIALIST Help with diagnosing dead PC

Thanks, Tony. I did replace the CMOS battery early in the process, and did a reset with the motherboard's hardware reset switch. So how do I figure out if it's the motherboard or the PSU when I don't have a spare PSU... I suppose I can order one from Amazon and 'return' it after testing :)

PCSPECIALIST Help with diagnosing dead PC

@TonyCarter thank you so, so much for your time. Really appreciated. Sadly it doesn't even boot up long enough to give me an LED error code. No helpful beeps. It's like it's shorting out immediately and restarting, or something similar. As you say, maybe just impossible to sort out over the...

PCSPECIALIST Help with diagnosing dead PC

Thanks Tony, Sorry, I should have been clearer. As soon as one powers on the machine, it stops and resets. The CPU fan starts to spin up, and then everything powers down. The only sound is the relay of the PSU clicking on and off. It doesn't even get as far as starting the POST.

PCSPECIALIST Help with diagnosing dead PC

This machine has been working perfectly on a daily basis for over a decade. It hasn't moved or had any hardware, software additions to it recently. Friday it booted up fine. Saturday it started to boot, then instantly stopped. A few seconds later it started to boot again, and again instantly...

PCSPECIALIST New PC from PC Specialist: I am locked out of Windows.

Thank you but but I pay them to install the OS, with the correct drivers, etc etc etc. I don't know what all the drivers should be, or what order to install them in. In my invoice it says I have "Windows 10/11 Multi-Language Recovery Image - Unlimited Downloads from Online Account". Is that...

PCSPECIALIST New PC from PC Specialist: I am locked out of Windows.

Just got a new PC from PC Specialist. Ordered with Win11 Pro installed. Turned it on last night just to check all working, and booted into Windows desktop just fine. I was surprised not to have a OOBE (out of box experience, ie setup and personalise). Today I switched PC on and it booted to an...

PCSPECIALIST Is the CPU cooling adequate for this build?

@sck451 Excellent! Thanks so much for your help! It sure does seem to be a problem finding a big case with good airflow and 5.25" bays. Maybe I should send them my old Coolermaster HAF! :-) Thanks again!

PCSPECIALIST Is the CPU cooling adequate for this build?

@sck451 Thanks so much for your feedback. You get to the ProArt via the Workstation Configurator. It has 2 x TB4 ports and 10GB Ethernet, both of which I need for attaching to my Thunderbolt RAIDs and my NAS. https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/Intel-z790-workstation/ Frustratingly USB...

PCSPECIALIST Is the CPU cooling adequate for this build?

Thank you. Budget is £3K or so inc VAT. It's for video editing and basic compositing with Adobe Premiere and After Effects, plus a fair amount of photo editing in Lightroom and Photoshop. Not for gaming I work with a 3 monitor setup: 2 x Dell 27" UHD monitors and a colour accurate EZIO WUXGA...

PCSPECIALIST Is the CPU cooling adequate for this build?

Hi all, This is my chosen system. The CPU air cooler I wanted, the Frost Flow 200, isn't available. Will the FrostFlow 150 be adequate for the i9-14900K, or do I need to go for an AIO watercooled solution? I've never had watercooling before. Any suggestions for which one? Anything I need to...
