Ok, I've figured it out. You can toggle the backlight with FN + Space - even in Linux!
Just thought I'd update just in case this helps someone else out.
Is there a way I can turn the keyboard backlight for the Proteus VIII back on again? I've somehow managed to turn it off, and I'm not sure how. I'm using:

Yes, but I've been experiencing a number of issues:
The BIOS is awful. It can't even boot from a flash drive - you need an external cd dvd drive and a disk.
The nvidia driver is not stable. Unless you're in high performance mode it randomly freezes.
