It does seem like the 7980X has a lot of headroom for overclocking, but given the fact I use the machine to render almost 24/7 I would prefer to avoid the need for overclocking for a hope...

That does make a lot of sense and you are absolutly right - I think I should probably go with the 7950X rather than the 3D variant.
I would love to upgrade to another version of Threadripper once it comes out although I wounder if it will be able to reach...
